It now appears to be official that NCL have sold the ss Independence to be broken up.
Information received is that she has been sold to Indian ship investors who will sell her on to the breakers.
This way NCL can not be accused of selling the ss Independence direct to the breakers if it contains asbestos or other toxic waste.
It just shows how crafty some people can be to get rid of something they do not want !
How long will it be now before the ss United States is also sold.

One could hope ssIndy might join her sister enroute?Otherwise, she will be part of a very hot summer(lucky for some;-)Carnival at Alang with ssNorway, Aquamara, Anastasis and more!Sorry, but one needs a sense of humour sometimes....Louy,back from lurking
I was thinking much the same when I made the posting.
A nice watery grave for what was two classic cruise ships !
Pam.. wondering why there are no environmentally friendly ship recycling centres in San Francisco Bay. Would save a lot of hassle and they'd have plenty of work.. just a teeny problem in that they would want paying to scrap a ship and not give money for the ship[s].

Actually, there has been some talk in Richmond, CA about trying to get the drydock facilities repaired so they can be used for ship breaking.
RFPs went out to two firms but nothing has been reported back yet.

One other plan was to take the Suisun Bay ships up to either Coos Bay or Newport Oregon which was to be partly operated by an Indian company if I am not mistaken. I have heard nothing further on this idea either.
Obviously having scrap centers in Chesapeake Bay and Brownsville Texas save quite a bit of $$ in towing costs for the locally based ships but to bring the West Coast ships through the Panama Canal costs a huge extra sum.

btw, I am all for the INDY going the way of her sister enroute and if the ship doesn't leave soon, winter weather might well make that a reality.

Sorry Neil, we don't intend to get rid of her yet. Maybe some new management. You can't have her back, she's not for sale.
