Hi

It is reported in ' The Cruise Junkie Events at Sea ' website that while Celebrity Cruises Millennium was at Villefrance on July 2nd she drift towards the shore and has hit some submerged rocks.

She sailed three hours late. The blades on one propeller are damaged and it is expected repairs will have to be carried out as she can only make about 11 knots with a lot of viabration.

There are lots of updates about this over on, ahem, CruiseCritic. Also lots of angst (from passengers on the next cruise) and unhappiness (from passengers on the current cruise).

I believe the incident happened at Cannes; Celebrity are now saying that there was an electrical problem. A number of blades on one of the propellers were bent. Celebrity made arrangements to fly spare propeller parts (!) to Rome in order to effect repairs, though in the event the parts' journey was itself fraught. Millenium itself limped straight to Civitavecchia (missing Livorno) and is now on its second day at Civ (so it has missed a call at Naples). Celebrity say that after initial difficulties (there was a problem with one particularly recalcitrant nut, I gather) the repairs are going well, and should be finished early today (6th). All this underwater, of course. Then the ship will continue, but will not go as far as Santorini or Athens - instead, it will go directly up the Adriatic sea and make impromptu calls at Corfu and Dubrovnik, before ending the cruise as scheduled at Venice. Celebrity are saying that they expect the repairs to be effective, and there shouldn't be any knock-on effect on future cruises.

Finally, Celebrity are reported as having refunded 50% of the cruise cost to all passengers, plus giving onboard credits of various amounts, depending on the grade of accomodation - sums of $500, $750 & $1000 have been mentioned.

I do this Autumn an 14 Night Cruise on the Galaxy with an Reduction of 30 % for some Propulsion Problems last May in Alaska on the Summit.

500-1000 Dollar and 50 % is an good offer.

Corfu and Dubrovnik are very nice, i would prefer to be there instead of Naples or Livorno.

In the event it all appears to have gone wrong - the repairs couldn't be finished despite Millenium spending several days at Rome. So the current cruise has been cancelled, and so has the next one (12 July) from Venice. Passengers on the 12 July cruise are being offered a complete refund, plus a free (equivalent) cruise, to be taken before December 2008.

Pax on the current cruise have also been given 100% refunds and free tours etc. They will be flown home from Rome or transferred to Venice to catch their scheduled flights.
