There were no immediate reports of injuries.
The 299-foot Empress of the North, carrying 281 people, was listing by about 6 degrees after hitting Hanus Rock at the southern end of the Icy Strait southwest of Juneau, said Petty Officer Christopher D. McLaughlin at the Coast Guard base in Kodiak.
A Coast Guard fixed-wing aircraft and helicopter were dispatched after an emergency radio message was received at 12:35 a.m. from the ship, operated by Majestic America Line of Seattle, McLaughlin said.
McLaughlin said the reason for the grounding was unclear, but he said the ship was not believed to be taking on water.
The Empress of the North is operated by Majestic America Line of Seattle. The ship has 112 staterooms, a three-story paddlewheel and galleries featuring Native American masks and Russian artwork, including Faberge eggs, according to its Web site.
Was this the same ship which went aground last year when on a cruise.
It seems these ships are more likely to be affect by strong winds due to their slow speeds and high superstructure.

It does also seem that Majestic Cruises anticipated the lack of experience of the mates by placing a second captain aboard with SE Alaska experience to act as an advisor to the mates when the master was not on the bridge. To the master's discredit and fault is that the advisor was ill and in his bunk but the master himself did not stay on the bridge himself immediately available to be roused in the event the mate got confused. I am a master with extensive SE Alaska experience and just to be sleeping on the bridge and giving strick orders to the mate on watch to slow the vessel and to wake me as soon as he became doubtful of his position may well have prevented this accident from occurring.
This time the ramifications might be grave for Majestic as there is damage to one of the azimuthing drives. If that damage cannot be repaired then a replacement may be more than a year off. The damage to the hull is less severe but with drydock space in short supply there might be a long wait for that as well. I am afraid that the EotN could well be out for the remainder of the summer.
