Gorgeous, thanks for those. She looks lovely. She was at Cowes this week but the weather was appalling; not seen any photos of her there yet, though some are in the pipeline.

Although I have seen it a thousand times, every time I do I can't help but thinking "that is one funky funnel".

"Ditto." Her name is not made up; Maxim Gorky was a famous Russian author and political activist.

Oops! I meant ditto.

I didn't think that it was made up, I just meant it seems like a weird name for a ship. I don't dislike it for her though.

It always reminded me of a waiter's uplifted hand with a serving tray balanced upon his fingertips. What can I say? Cruises and food....

When I 1st watched 'Juggernaut' I assumed it was a dummy funnel made for the film. I kept waiting for WHEN it was going to be blown up!

You think that is weird? Aurthor, Mr. Maxim Gorkiy's real name was actually Aleksei Maksimovich Peshkov.

I always like this ship and have a dramatic photo of her (as Hamburg) passing a sailboat closely at high speed as my computer wallpaper. The lovely image was taken from the sailboat and passengers are lining the rails of both vessels.

You mean like this?......

This was from the Inaugural brochure of TS HAMBURG in 1969, when she was known as German Atlantic Line's "Space Ship."

Too funny! They should have had the waiter pose with the tray held above his head. Life imitating art imitating life..

So Rich, does the Red jacket still fit after all these years?

Too funny! Actually I would never fit into my officers' jackets or formal dress jacket any more from my days as Chief Purser!

Hi,

there are pictures taken from the top of her funnel. You can climb up to the platform. First you climb inside to the middle section, where the tubes start to be and then you can climb outside. The front tube has stairs.
But I do not recommend this when the ship is sailing... You'd be black afterwards...

Here's a picture:

Thanks for the picture!

Passengers are not normally allowed on the Bridge, in the engine room or engine control room these days, unless you are important, know people in high places or are staying in the 'owners suite'. Even then it's not a right.

Up a funnel is a definate 'dream on' whoever you may be or know.

Back in my s/s NORWAY days, we had singer Anne Murray aboard to film a Christmas Televison program (early 80s). The opening of the program what a shot of her standing on one of NORWAY's funnel 'wings' (filmed from a helicopter).

It was a slightly breezy day , and she was petrified. If anyone could dig up this film, you can see her plastered smile covering her trembling face.

I would think if anyone were to rescue those funnels, you likely would still see her claw marks through decades of paint.

On some ships it is indeed difficult - but on some it is not. There ARE quite some ships where passengers have access to the bridge and even the engine room (usually with minor restrictions) - so if this is important one just has to choose the right ship. This is one of the myths that should be eliminated amongst ship enthusiasts.
Nevertheless, the funnel is usually off limits. (nice picture - thanks)

I was generalising!

I once wrote to the Master while on board a mega-ship asking for a Bridge visit. He replied by letter saying "..it was not allowed by maritime law, but he could fit me in tomorrow". Go figure!

Nice photos Bart. I like the memorabilia cabinet with the mini Hamburg funnel; it looks a bit out of proportion or is it just the glass doing that?
