Thats what I thought too. I didn't even know they did it that way by cutting a hole in the side.
I just went back and looked at the conversion photos, and you're right--the machinery on QE2 was replaced through the top. Now I can't remember which vessel was converted through the sides--old age is creeping up on me!

ss Nieuw Amsterdam had 'new' boilers installed through a large cut in her side in the late 1960s.
I see on one of the Celebrity message boards that it is possible that they will be returning the Cirque de Soleil bar 'the bar at the edge of the earth' to it's original glory. If this is so does anybody know if this will be done during the time in dry dock fixing the pods. I do hope so, for me this monstrosity of a bar slightly spoils what is a stunning ship.
