Great photos Steve, much appreciated. The wonder of the net is, that whether I be in the UK, Outer Mongolia, or on Antarctia I can still enjoy the ship tours. Bart does a fantastic job, and so do you, along with others. The beauty is that being half a world apart it's not that often you get to see the same vessels; and the rest of us can just enjoy the whole lot without getting out of the seat

Nice work, Steve. I was looking for a good photologue of Veendam, as, since she cruises regularly out of Tampa, she's a viable option for a 7-day voyage with HAL.

If anyone's interested, and as it seems I couldn't find this posted elsewhere (and I did search), Steve has updated his Veendam photologue to encompass the refurbishments.

Nice job as always, Steve. It was of particular interest to me, seeing as I will be sailing on her in 2 months.

Hi Gang

Great photos! I sailed on VEENDAM in 2000 and it was a great ship. Not so much today!

Stein Kruse, the current CEO of HAL has butchered this ship. The retreat concept has eliminated a lot of out door deck space. (If you don't believe me, check out the original deck plans and compare to today's VEENDAM.) Club HAL has eliminated even more. Good luck finding a deck chair if you want to sit outside. The very shallow pool does not work as water sloshes everywhere in even normal seas. And too, can any normal person even sit on one of those low sitting crowded chairs by the tip toe pool? Most of the chairs in the lounges are very small and no doubt uncomfortable for the average American. This is especailly true judging by the photos of MIX.

The lanai staterooms with their reserved deck chairs means many non lanai passengers will find it difficult to find a chair and watch the sea go by. With the expansion of the spa, the view from the crows nest has been compromised if you are looking forward. No way will I ever sail on such a ship.

And I don't even want to get into the overworked waiters and cabin stewards or the reduced number of high quality musicians in the various lounges.

Gee, I'm not liking the sound of all that, though I can definitely see how the Retreat is a crock. All it really seems to be is a cover-up, and not a good one at that, for a blatant attempt at shoehorning more passengers than is practical into this ship. Hey, maybe that's why the chairs appears tighter.....

Funny, I know some folks who went on her last year and said they had a great time.....to each their own, I guess. We'll soon find out.

Some friends just sailed on the newly enhanced Rotterdam this past weekend and reported that the Retreat was fantastic! They would have told me if they felt otherwise.

Well, we'll see. Clearly one has little to do with the other, as the structural add-ons to Veendam were not made to Rotterdam. But the idea of the removal of 50% of the pool capacity on a ship that is in Bermuda in the middle of summer does not appeal to me. That mid-ship pool is going to be overcrowded at best. I guess I'll keep my fingers crossed. If need be, I'll just beat a hasty retreat (no pun intended) into the comfort of air conditioning. And yet, I should be more than able to deal with the heat by now, seeing as I've lived in Florida for almost 6 years.
