Saw this posted on another board... the last line seems to indicate that Galaxy and Mercury will be getting treatments similar to what was done with Century, in 2008 and 2009, respectively.

Yes, there are plans for a revitalization of both the GL and MR ála CN, but time has not been decided.

Given CENTURY's success with the revitalization, Celebrity has more reason to do the same with MERCURY and GALAXY.

I am surprised MERCURY's SF-drydock, they are only adding balconies to the aft of the ship. I thought they would atleast take out the bar on the aft top deck and carve out some sky suites.

...however the following mini-cruise on CENTURY after her incomplete renovation probably put some Brits off Celebrity for life!

Quite possibly, but in the big scheme of things I don't think it will matter much. Just about every line has had disastrous cruises, usually fresh out of a dry-dock or from the ship being built. It seems it's unavoidable. Cunard probably has the worst track record but they seem to be doing just fine. I'm sure Celebrity will too. It's not an excuse by any means, and it shouldn't happen, but the fact remains it does for a variety of reasons.

Anyone who has cruised often should know that poor cruises can happen. Hopefully they also realize it's not typical of the line they are sailing on. I think just about every cruise line today offers a pretty good experience, and I've tried most of them. No line can afford to provide a consistently poor experience as the competition is simply too great. They would be out of business rather quickly.

Good afternoon,
Yes, CENTURY's revitalization was incomplete by the time she resumed service in the spring....and work was still being done during her fall Transat !!!
Not entirely surprising, given the scope of what Celebrity wanted done...
If we think for a minute Mercury's alterations are going to be completed after a mere 6 days drydock in SFO in the spring....think again !!!.
It's a reality in life that compromises are reached between needed time ''out of service'' for hotel maintenance and optimum ''time in service'' for bottom line results. Can't and won't be helped.
At least, the good thing is, Celebrity IS doing something about the hotel maintenance of their fleet....and, if nothing else, this deflates the perception that they were NOT.

Happy sailings
Cheers

No doubt about this. I think it was for a variety of reasons. It seems the time alloted for these major refits is never enough. Each day the ship is out of service is lost revenue, so the pressure is on the shipyard to complete the work in the fewest amount of days. In addition I think the shipyards often underestimate the time actually required to help them win the contract. Of course the cruise line is going to pick the yard that can promise to complete all the work to a specified standard, in the least amount of time and at the lowest price.

Another factor could be that Royal Caribbean/Celebrity has never used Fincantieri before. There could have been some communication and procedural issues that had to be ironed out which may have also caused delays.

It will be interesting to see if RCI uses Fincantieri in the future, which could be an indication of how satisified they were with the work on CENTURY.

I notice that 'Classic Celebrity' ships, Horizon, Mercury..etc, are quite a bit different from their new generation ships, not including Mille Class,
I hope to be lucky enough to sail on Mercury before and after her reviltalization, drydock in SF makes it that much easier.

Which new generation ships?
If we leave Xpedition and Quest aside, there is 'only' the Century, Galaxy & Mercury and the Millenium class.

Do you mean those under construction at Meyer? Have you seen renderings of the interiors? (would be very interesting to see that )

Going back to the question of the enhancement of Galaxy & Mercury, one point is that in fact Century was quite a bit different, I gather, from Galaxy & Mercury. As a result there was scope to add a lot of balconies in the refit, from which Celebrity are earning lots of increased revenue. I gather that Galaxy/ Mercury don't have the same scope for additional balconies, thus a refit will end up with a ship with more or less the same earning capacity as now. This may reduce the scale of the refit quite a bit.

I just got off the Mercury on a Panama Canal Cruise.
In talking with the Hotel Director and a number of
other officers. Very little will be done to the Mercury
in its upcoming drydock. Not much more than
normal maintenance. No balconys.

We are booked next Xmas on the Mercury in
Australia and we are rethinking that decision.
Mercury is old, and while it is in good condition it
is not up to date. After Celebrity spends the money
for upgrades on Journey and Quest there will not
be anything left for Mercury or Galaxy.

I doubt if Celebrity are short of money being owned by RCI, the number two cruise line.

If they were short of money newbuilds would not be on the books!

Rex,
The Zenith is moving over to Pullmantur when the Journey comes to Celebrity. The Quest follows over a few months later. Sort of a two for one swap, though Celebrity gets the much nicer hardware with the two former R Class ships. They are not even renaming the Zenith.

I doubt the upgrades for Celebrity Journey and Quest will be significant nor really expensive.

Perhaps money already has been put aside for MERCURY AND GALAXY

Just because RCL has money, that does not
translate to X. From what I have been gathering.
RCL has been somewhat cheap with X. RCL has
their own projects which are quite expensive.

I guess we will just have to see. But I do not see
any big rush by X to redo Mercury and Galaxy.

The fact that Celebrity is a ‘premium’ cruise line and that 'Galaxy' and 'Mercury' have not been state-of-the-art for a decade, I would have though that by 2008 and 2009 they will be in need of a major refit.
