For this year, for the famous celebration of New Year's Eve 2006, for the world-wide famous fireworks display at Madeira we shall have 8 cruise ships visiting our port, namely:-

You appear to be in the dark somewhere at sea Cambodge; maybe you will have your own fireworks

Only Oriana has a cam on the list above and it's completely out of focus
The panorama is lovely, earlier on though there were 2 AIDAblus. Now the ships are all looking beautiful lit up..

Aida Blu, the former Sun Bird(Airtours) ex Song Of America..(RCCL)..are still in Madeira. They obviously are staying over?

Hello cruiseshipluver,

Yes, I confirm that these two beauties - MS AIDA BLU and MV THOMSON DESTINY will overnigth in the port, also, the MS SAGA ROSE will be berthing at 01/0730 hrs - ETD 02/1845 hrs, meaning thus that we shall have on the 1st of January 3 cruise ships in the port...

Thanks Shipping agent. I honestly did not knwo that the former 'Sun Bird' was named Thompson Destiny. I knew she had dissapeared from the seas sailing as Sun Bird but not for that or as that...Thanks anyways. Bless

Just to let you know that the 2006/07 fireworks at Madeira were awarded with the title as the GREATEST FIREWORKS EVENT OF THE WORLD by the Guiness Book of the Records!!

Take a look at the following link to have an idea:-

Now, imagine that we had something like 13000 pax & crew on the 8 cruise liners, and...you can already book in advance for next year.

Fabulous! I can't wait to see it next time. Out of all the cruises I'm doing that is the one I'm looking forward to most. I've been told so much about it and Funchal by people who have been there on cruises for New Year and others with timeshares they stay in for the festivities.

I'm confused about Saga Rose for next year. The Saga site says she arrives on the 1st for 8am. Is she coming earlier? Speaking of which, do you know why she was still there yesterday?

Phoenix Reisen lists Albatros as being there this year on New Year's Eve from 8am-12am. Is that correct?

I looked up Costa's site and Fortuna will be sailing out of FL on the 30th to the Caribbean.

I can't get any MSC results for December even though you can select it now. Anyone else had any luck?

Hello Patsy,

Well, concerning the Saga ships, definetly the Saga Rose will arrive still on the 31st to assist the fireworks display,however she will berth only on the 1st to be more accurate, but logically her arrival will be on the 31st...

The Saga Rose stayed yesterday till 02/2300 Hrs as initially foreseen, there was no problems at all!!!

Both Saga sisters will be on the 11th January on Funchal...magnificent!!!

Concerning the ALBATROS she will be one additional too...I have just confirmed.

Concerning the COSTA FORTUNA it will be confirmed soon, also the MSC TBN ship...please check this at the ports web site:

Patsy, you are always welcome to Funchal, so if you visit us on board of a cruise ship, just let me know which one will it be, because most likely I will be her agent!!!

Thanks for all that. I'm glad Saga Rose had no problems. They're both here on Sunday for their world cruise departure fireworks. I can't wait to see them both in Funchal at the end of the year. I'll be on Aurora with my camera and video camera. After watching that video you posted the link for of this year's fireworks I'll probably make myself dizzy trying to capture as much as possible. It will be worth it though. I can't wait!

so why did msc musica sail and miss the fireworks or did she anchor offshore?

came to madeira once on the topaz, of all the places we visited, this was by far the best.

where is the best place to view the fireworks - from a ship anchored off or on the shore?

Hello Gaz

The MSC MUSICA left the pier at 1500 hrs to vacant berth for both CS AIDA BLU and MV THOMSON DESTINY. She remained drifting off Funchal port limits until 2300 Hrs, when she came closer to see the fireworks display.

We all miss the SS The Topaz, what a superb ship!!! Her famous Thomson rainbow colors made history in Madeira, and her profile and lines are unique, what a ship!

For me definetly the best place to see the fireworks is at sea, on board a cruise ship...preferably anchored. I saw this year on board the CS AIDA BLU, and believe me, it was superb...however I suggest also that you could see at least one time up in the hills, because the visual effect has a diffrent and bigger dimension.
