Just looking at a topic about Sky Wonder and said it should have a Spanish name but then thought of others in the fleet and some of the names are stupid, so what is the most stupid name ever given to a cruiseship/liner ? Or just not right...

Blue Moon (please...)
so Blue Dream as well (actually its worse I mean BLUE Dream - as in porn !)

Another I always thought a bit dof....
Dawn Princess, just never sounded right.

Ectasy would have to be on the list also.

Others ?

Don't underestimate the allure and "coolness" of the english language upon not-english speakers.

Most companies, or at least many many business here have english names, without having anything to do with USA or Britain. It oozes internationality, modernity, cool

at the other hand, it gives a distance - the real meaning is not or seldom coming through, other than a with a native english speaker.

I consider the contemporary names of carnival, carinval destiny or freedom or whatsoever not really fitting and very confusing, as the early -ward ships of NCL

Very true--take a trip to Europe or Asia and it's amazing how many trendy T-shirts are worn, with English graphics, even though the words may not make sense. You'll see things like 'tree dream,' or 'Boston Tigers,' or 'cool racing.'

Those ships' names seem meaningless to us English-speakers, but probably seem very cutting-edge to the Spanish market.

A few years ago, I was watching the ferries in Bastia with my mother in law. The Moby Love was leaving the port. She told me "It's amazing how the most stupid ships names may sound cool once written in English". And that's true that in the non english speaking world, you can write anything in English and it will automatically look modern, cool, international... Even if it's totally meaningless and stupid.

The RCI names sound corny to my ears nowadays as well.

but i a presume R one to R eight was quiet
something to come up with

and in the wake of Renaissance One to Eight it was a stunning step forward...

however do i feel stupid that i don't understand the coolness ????

If we're truly cynical then
Norwegian anything should be renamed Malaysian anything.
RCI should drop the 'of the Seas' - its a ship, we didn't think it was 'of the skies'...

R 1, R2 etc

Are there any really good ship names in mainstream lines? Except UK cruise ships, where the names are almost all greatand mean something!

Really Matt? I like the "of the Seas" suffix very much indeed. And how about "Boudicca" as a great and meaningful name? It's hideous.

I always found "Albatros" a bit weird, as I do "Walrus".

Mec is right in many ways though - the Fred Olsen names are 'interesting'. Reflecting their passengers better they would be better naming after people. Back to the Winston Churchill, Vera Lynn and even Margaret Thatcher....

That said I still say that on balance a greater proportion of the UK names are meaningful either to the UK or ship lovers, not just something dreamt up in marketing. Of course that is changing though!

When I first heard the name 'Song of Flower' I thought it rather stupid, then it grew on me (just like a flower).

I've no idea what it means, though.

I loved (and still love) these ships - but 'Royal Viking Star' is a bit strange - like 'Crystal Harmony'.

Not having been on it...but the name Pride of America is a bit presumptuous and insulting, and plastered across the side of one of the ugliest cruise ships ever built.

I vote for stupid ship names which begin with 'The' as part of the name. I believe Chandris-Fantasy started this back in the '80s when they renamed the VICTORIA to the THE VICTORIA. They also had the THE AZUR. Currently we have the THE NEPTUNE, the THE TOPAZ, the THE EMERALD, perhaps several more!

LOL Mike I had never thought of Blue Dream in that way Blue Moon is an oddity.

Naming goes in circles back through the years, all the 'Empress of xxx' the 'xx Star' the 'City of xxx' even 'xxx Castle'...

Now we have the same for xxx and only the line distinguishes the rest, not just for cruise ships either; Carnival Freedom/Liberty, Freedom/Liberty of the Seas, Emirates Freedom/Liberty.. the next 2 'of the seas' and Carnival will be Peace & Star, Emirates Peace/Star..

Although I think Premier was an innovative product and well done for the intended market (while it was the Official Cruise Line of Disney, days), and I do appreciate the nod to Florida's Space Coast (Kennedy Space Center), I was dumbstruck to see 'star/ship' Royale, Oceanic, Atlantic & Majestic.

Having been a regular aboard Oceanic under Home Lines banner, you cannot imagine my shock when I drove into Port Canaveral to see her prior to her 'star/ship Oceanic' inaugural and seeing the red hull and lifeboat propellors painted yellow.

When I was visiting the bridge, I could not help order "Make it so, Number One....Engage!"

Further, I will NEVER acknowledge the 'Big Red Boat" debacle.

When aboard Majestic for the fire in 1991, and adrift for 3 days (no toilets , power or a/c Thomson Destiny mahem fans), we crew where referring to her, somewhat embarassed, as 'The Big Dead Boat".

It's not even a bad name if you translated it English.
(free translation) Peoples friendship. An shipsname is not stranger written in German ore Dutch (walrus) It makes such names more exotic.

Those Aida names are a bit strange and quite difficult to speak out. besides that those Aida names are ugly to fore my idea.
