Well, it's time for another cruise. On November 7, my partner and I will board Regal Princess in Acapulco for the 10 day through the canal terminating in San Juan. I honestly have not been on a 10 day cruise before...and don't know what to expect. Have any of you been on this cruise? I would also welcome feedback on Regal Princess. She is a very unusual looking craft. It appears that she has few staterooms with balcony (we have a outside stateroom on Emerald deck, starboard side of course).

A 10 day cruise isn't really much different from a typical 7 day. Because of the added time you will likely have fewer kids and a somewhat older group. I've been on several Princess ships but not the Regal. Except for the lack of PC dining I hear that it is like most other Princess cruises.
We were booked on the same cruise (except Dec. sailing) but we just cancelled and switched to the 15 day Mercury out of San Deigo. Looks like the same cruise with a few added ports. When you return, let me know what I missed.

Thanks Joe. What I am most intrigued about is the sole shore excursion that we have booked. A visit to Quepos, and Manuel Antonio in Costa Rica, which happens to fall on the eleventh, my 50th birthday! We are not much for shore excursions, but this one caught my eye. Are there any "must sees" in Guatemala?

The Regal is what I call old fashioned Princess, traditonal 2 seating dining, with the addition of casual dining in Cafe Du Sol. The ship is very nice especially the Bengal Bar and Intermezzo, my favourite is the Wine Bar at the top of the Atrium. Recent refitting has updated the interiors with warmer colours and wood which improved the ambience no end, she was very cold when originally launched. She is a very attractive ship inside although I always thought somewhat disjointed outside, almost collection of different ship parts joined together that somehow don't quite work together.

The only downside is that the Regal is very much an inside ship, few public rooms have sea views, The Dome has great views but is spoiled by the constant ringing of slot machines, the main restaurant has windows but they are relatively small so when you sit down unless you are close to them you cannot see out (unless you get a table on the central raised area) no proper prom deck adds to the feeling of being remote, the upper decks are great but can be crowded (not on your cruise I am sure with slightly older pax). Cabins are spacious and well fitted although a little dated. It is nice to have a proper cinema on board. The gym is down on deck 2, no windows there either and when I last saw her did need a refit although this has I am sure been done by now.

In any event the panama trip is by far one of my favourites and regardless of which ship you are on it is brilliant.

RP will not get a major refit until next year when she is transferred to P&O Australia and becomes Pacific Dawn.

Major change is the movement of the casino from the dome dow to a lower deck. The dome becomes a casual bar.

Given her role as basically a cruise ship from Sydney to Noumea and Vanuatu, you have to wonder if her lack of a great deal of outdoor space will be a problem.
