'Sydney based Creative Cruising have announced a series of exciting and competitively priced itineraries that are now available to Australian passengers on 'The Emerald'. Commencing November 2007 The Emerald will depart from Europe to Australia and operate a 2 month season here before cruising back to Europe in late January 08.
The 26,428 ton ship carries approximately 1000 people and was rebuilt in 1992 at a cost of USD$72 million dollars. The Berlitz Cruise Guide 2006 rates The Emerald 3 stars and says 'the ship has a spacious ocean-liner feel'. I know Berlitz books and some of the ratings are quite harsh and some of the technical details very wrong.
examples include stating incorrect numbers of cabins, stating a ship has pods when it has traditional propulsion, incorrect tonnage, incorrect clasification of small/large etc, it has a bias towards smaller ships and in particular Hapag Lloyd.
Although if the information is correct the only thing good about the book is the stats on ships like size, displacement, decks, pools, food outlets and theatre capacity - which is what people really want to know - well I do before I book anyway.
I also feel the grading standards on Berlitz is ridiculous - they grade entertainment different for every ship - I feel a whole line should recieve the same grade for entertainment as they have the same shows and routines - the crew can go from one ship to another and the crew who were rated on one ship may not be there when the reader goes who looked at Berlitz. This should apply to food as well as the menu's and styles are unique to a particular line.
