On 30 August, Orient Lines' 22.080 grt m.s. Marco Polo called at Amsterdam. As we are aiming to choose this ship for our 2007 cruise, we requested Orient Lines for a visit to the ship.

Well they shouldn't take much convincing - she may not be steam, but she's a classic - a definite case of nice ship, shame about the ownership

TBF, What do you mean by "shame about the ownership"?

Wow. I have to say that after seeing these photos, I take Marco Polo much more seriously. She seems to be a very nice, well-maintained ship. I'm really surprised at how modern and tastefully decorated her interiors are, especially given her age. I guess I just expected a former Soviet liner to be much more crude and strictly functional.

Great job on those photos, Willem!

Her interiors are fantastic, designed by A&M Katzourakis. She also has the most delightful and conveniently planned stern of almost any ship, with gym, then nightclub, then lido restaurant all looking out over the pool and stern.

I agree Mike. Her exterior stern decks are magnificent. Reminiscent of liners long gone. A real ship! I'm impressed with her decor as well.
The only thing I saw that I didn't like were the booths by the windows in the main dining room. It makes the space look more like a diner than an elegant restaurant.

Carnival is notorious for having casual booths in the formal dining room. I got stuck at one once and hope to never again. It was for six and that meant two people were always stuck in the middle. Also, it did not feel appropriate when dressed in a tux. On Carnival though, the booths are never directly by the window, but usually in the center or sides of the dining room and raised up on platform. Apparently some people like them??

Ernie

ps - thanks to Willem for the photos!

Ernie

Know what you mean about the booths, but I have to say that the booth window tables for four are the roomiest and widest tables for four I have ever had on a ship...

Mike,

I returned from a cruise on the Marco Polo a couple of weeks ago and I also have to admit that the booths are surprisingly roomy.

She's looking good.

That brought back a lot of memories. Can't believe that it was 4½ years ago now!
