Hello everyone,
Just wondering what everyones thoughts on this are. Having sailed on exactly none of these ships, I thought I might ask for advice on something of a tiebreaker. We're booked on Explorer of the Seas next Summer for a 9 night to the Caribbean and Bermuda. Now that we've just gotten back from Bermuda, we're reconsidering that cruise because of some of the ports of call and its short stay at King's Wharf- plus the large number of people that can be expected. Not that we're set on changing our plans, but at this point we're thinking we'd prefer a cruise to Bermuda and Bermuda only on a smaller ship. Empress of the Seas isn't totally out but it's not really a contender- plus I know what she's like. It's now between the following:

Explorer of the Seas: The longest cruise and the greatest variety in ports of call, but probably too many people and the stay in Bermuda seems all too short. 2nd most expensive.

Norwegian Crown: Wouldn't mind the chance to see a smaller ship like Norwegian Crown that will soon be leaving the fleet, but with Freestyle Dining, it seems like she has few public rooms (excluding resturaunts)- even for a ship her size. Plus in the fall of the same year we'll be sailing on Norwegian again aboard Norwegian Gem for her maiden voyage. Cheapest.

Zenith: Another ship that is small by todays standards, seems to have more public rooms than Norwegian Crown and is something new- we haven't gone on a Celebrity cruise before. Don't know how the decor and entertainment/activities are, however. Most expensive as of now, but is very likely to fall in price.

Any help would be appreciated. Keep in mind, however, that I have sailed on both Royal Caribbean (most recently in December '04) and Norwegian (just a week ago for the 5th time) and both think highly of them. So I'd rather not hear anything along the lines of "NCL are rubbish...."....

Well speaking more of bermuda than the ships, I agree that stopping in Hamilton and St. George's for a few days is definitely preferable than just a short stop out at the West End. I have sailed on Celebrity a few times, but on their newer vessels, and can say that they did a great job with food and service. The entertainment was not great, but on the Bermuda cruise, I do not think it is so much of a factor as there is so much to do ashore at nights as well. I don't have much to say about the N. Crown, except to say she is a particularly attractive ship, and the smaller number of public rooms also takes on less issue as you are in port for such an extended time, that Bermuda becomes your favorite lounge or bar...

I have sailed to Bermuda twice now - once on HORIZON (before refurbs) and last October Voyager of the Seas. If you want to see BERMUDA - I would suggest take Zenith and if you want to go to Kings Wharf (either by local transit or by ferry) it is a great spot (but not to stop at for 3 or 4 days).

I loved having my time in Hamilton and the in St. GEorge's - it gave me a well balanced "lay of the land".

If you want the CRUISE and the island is only an inceidental - go for Explorer - there was SO much to do (for those that want to do it).

I was on Voyager as part of a conference so I had no choice...my pick - hands down was Horizon. But given your choice is NCL Crown or Zenith - I would suggest Zenith.

Good Luck!

Maybe I can help. I just returned from the Explorer. I sailed on the Zenith in 98 and I just did a travel agent tour in 05. I also toured the Crown this July.

Explorer (6 years old).
PRO: Its a stunning ship! Even though I knew what to expect I was amazed at every turn. You may know all of this already but her interiors are impressive and vast. There are two 10 story atriums that is connected by a 4/5 story promanade that is lined with stores, pubs, and a place to grab a quick bite. It reminded me of a mock street. Plus there is Rock climbing wall, mini golf, full size basketball court, rolller blading, ice rink (with great ice shows) a three story theater, three story impressive dining room. I honestly really liked this ship a lot and if you are traveling with kids its an EXCELLENT choice!
CON: Ship leaves from Bayonne. There is nothing like leaving from NYC! Plus she is really big and at times you will feel it. Elevators were slowish and in regards to Bermuda you dont dock in the two convienent ports. you dock on the outskirts. You still can get around by bus and ferry but it could be a bit hectic.

Zenith (14 years old)
PRO: I sailed on her in '98 and saw her last in '05. Great food. Was refurbished in '99 or '00. Spacious ship but small enough to dock at the small ports in Bermuda. She has a small children's center and I think service levels are a little higher then Royal or NCl. I like Celebrity. I enjoy their european modern decor, service and food!
CON: Leaves from Bayonne!!! ERRRR. Ship does not have balconies. I think she looks very worn. On the tour I went on in '05. The rooms I saw (from suite to inside) had large stains on the carpet and furnishings. The bedspeads were the same as they were when she debuted in 1992. Overall the ship looked tired (BUT this could have changed I know they redid the ship in late '05).

NCL Crown (18 years old)
PRO: I toured the ship a few months ago expecting a run down ship. I was very surprised. She is a very charming ship!! Most of her public spaces seemed refreshed and cozy. Carpeting look new through out the ship. I though the food was good on par with NCL. They have decent size kids facilities but no kids pool. The ship is small enough and docks in the small ports plus she leaves from midtown Manhattan and makes for a wonderful departure. I really liked her and would book in a heartbeat. Just keep in mind she is not the newest ship on the block and doesnt have all the bells and whistles of the Explorer.
CON: Some rooms seem a bit worn. Balconies are only in the suites. She runs on freestyle (which is not a negative to me!! I like it but some dont) on a ship her size freestyle MAY be a bit slow. So you may have to wait a bit since she is limited on dining areas. I beleive the Crown has 5 restuarants.

I hope this helps!!

I would definately pick a smaller ship for Bermuda. Less amout of people at port, longer stays.

Btw, I thought NORWEGIAN CROWN is leaving the fleet at the end of this year?

No. She's chartered by Star until November 2007 to complete the planned itineries. They aren't doing what Carnival did with Pacific Sky which goes in their favour.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the ships. I have been on the Crown to Bermuda and I have been on Voyager, sister to the Explorer. Never been on Zenith but have done several Celebrity Cruises. The crown while not my favorite ship as others have said was quite cozy. Her cabins seemed quite worn though when I was on her in 2004 and she had significant plumbing issues with sewage smells outside our hallway on a daily basis. Even though they would fix the problem, it kept on recurring. The staff on NCL are some of the friendliest afloat while Celebrity has a more reserved and European style crew. I definately think that the smaller ships are more conducive to Bermuda but I have been on the Grandeur 9 day carribbean cruise 4 times and although the Explorer has a slightly different itinerary I can tell you that the 9 day cruise is great. Also, something I was not fond of the crown was the swimming pool located all the way aft. It got crowded frequently and finding a lounge chair anywhere on the ship was quite a hassle. Even more so then on any other ship I have been on. I'm sure you will enjoy whichever ship you pick and they are each special in their own right. Explorer gives you all of the modern conveniences found on the megaships, the Crown gives you a taste of what ships where like back in the 80s and the zenith gives you an in between experience in my opinion.

Last year, we took Zenith's sister, Horizon, out of Philly to Bermuda and it was a wonderful. Excellent food and service and the size of the ship was no problem.

I'm sure Zenith will show her age a bit; but so does a '57 Chevy,.....

Thanks for the advice. At this point it looks like we're staying on Explorer of the Seas, which is all right, though I'm leaning torward Zenith at the moment. Even Empress of the Seas can't be totally ruled out despite the tiny cabins and memories of a lackluster cruise during her inaugural season as Nordic Empress. Those two factors do not make her my favorite ship.

I also forgot to mention I was on Mariner of the Seas...which is quite close. I think there are some small differences like Mariner of the Seas having smaller cabins than Explorer but other than that there were not enough differences for me to leave out mentioning it...
