You folks in the UK are fortunate to have so many smaller, more classic ships operating. Here in North America we've lost most of them and have to deal with the contemporary giants, unless we travel overseas.

She is a 1949 built passenger vessel operated by Waverley Excursions and is registered in Bristol, trading around the coasts of Britain on day excursions

Two major issues, apparently. One of which is the existing MV Balmoral. The other is that "the family" have the final say, and have not yet decided; or at least they are not ready to say whether they have decided.
I wouldn't bet against Balmoral, though.
BTW, Black Prince is still in the brochure all the the way through to 2008, and I can't see the 1,000-passenger NC being a direct replacement for little old BP, can you?

Fred. Olsen names fifth ship3/7/2006Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has announced that its fifth ship will be called Balmoral and will be the first ship of this name to sail under the Fred. Olsen flag. The 34,242gt vessel, currently operating as NCL's Norwegian Crown, will transfer to Fred. Olsen in autumn 2007 and begin cruising in January 2008.Although Scottish by name, on board the décor and design concepts of Balmoral will reflect a British atmosphere in keeping with the other vessels in the fleet, says the line. Public room names include Blenheim and Ballindalloch named after a stately home set in the heartland of Scotland in the Grampian region.

Yes. Apart from some wartime service as a troopship, Balmoral Castle was in the Union Castle mail service from 1910 to 1939 when she was broken up. Built in Glasgow, she was one of the few Union Castle ships that were not built at Harland & Wolff.
