.. so I am informed in a marketing letter from my TA. "Norwegian Crown will undergo an extensive refit and begin cruising under a new name of "Balmoral" in early 2008."

Rather apt I think and a nice name; will not cause the controversy of Boudicca. [Sorry if this has already been mentioned but I can't find it anywhere]. I have just looked through my Olsen bits and don't think they have had a Balmoral before?

BALMORAL will be a nice name for the ship and her intended market. I know that NORWEGIAN CROWN has her detractors, but I've always enjoyed her size, her layout, and style. A wonderful vessel indeed.

You folks in the UK are fortunate to have so many smaller, more classic ships operating. Here in North America we've lost most of them and have to deal with the contemporary giants, unless we travel overseas.

A nice name.....perhaps a bit "grand," but will be liked by the intended pax. I wish her much success in her new role with Olsen.

This will be another first for Fred Olsen if the name Balmoral is to be used. The name has not been used in its history. I just hope that people won't be confused between the Balmoral pleasure steamer and the cruise ship Balmoral. I can imagine people saying they'll be cruising down the Bristol Channel on the Balmoral and become puzzled if they think of the cruise ship Balmoral rather than the pleasure steamer...

I like it. It retains the Scottish theme. Union Castle once had a Balmoral Castle, did they not?

Sorry but the name MV Balmoral is not for sale

She is a 1949 built passenger vessel operated by Waverley Excursions and is registered in Bristol, trading around the coasts of Britain on day excursions

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery

Bessie? that was the name of a one time neighbour's Labrador.. she was a good swimmer in the river, but not sure about her sea keeping abilities I am guessing that perhaps it will be goodbye to BP at the time?

Just back from the official launch of Olsen's 2007-8 brochure, where the assembled company bigwigs were keeping tight-lipped about their new name for Norwegian Crown.

Two major issues, apparently. One of which is the existing MV Balmoral. The other is that "the family" have the final say, and have not yet decided; or at least they are not ready to say whether they have decided.

I wouldn't bet against Balmoral, though.

BTW, Black Prince is still in the brochure all the the way through to 2008, and I can't see the 1,000-passenger NC being a direct replacement for little old BP, can you?

Now have fred Olsen confirmed Norwegian Crown's new name :

http://www.fredolsencruises.com/fredolsen/process/news/article/id=4766.html

ups...sorry

Fred. Olsen names fifth ship
3/7/2006
Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has announced that its fifth ship will be called Balmoral and will be the first ship of this name to sail under the Fred. Olsen flag. The 34,242gt vessel, currently operating as NCL's Norwegian Crown, will transfer to Fred. Olsen in autumn 2007 and begin cruising in January 2008.
Although Scottish by name, on board the décor and design concepts of Balmoral will reflect a British atmosphere in keeping with the other vessels in the fleet, says the line. Public room names include Blenheim and Ballindalloch named after a stately home set in the heartland of Scotland in the Grampian region.

I think Galaxy meant to give us the SI link. It doesn't appear on FOCL's website yet, well not that either you or I can find anyway

Yes. Apart from some wartime service as a troopship, Balmoral Castle was in the Union Castle mail service from 1910 to 1939 when she was broken up. Built in Glasgow, she was one of the few Union Castle ships that were not built at Harland & Wolff.
