hi all
the caspi cruises' dream princess has been renamed "dream" - due to the fact that "princess" is a name related to princess cruises.
the "dream" is now in parema, undergoing a little refubishment which include new carpeting.
the ship is going to dock in haifa in 14th june to begean a new season (in late).
maiden innagural voyage is set to 15th june 2006.

You mean Princess Cruises have had the cheek to object? Will they be renaming Coral Princess themselves then?

Looks familiar...

Nice ship, but I did not realize Princess Cruises had the international trademark on the term 'Princess' in naming ships?

Princess Cruises would own the trademark to the brand name Princess Cruises, but I doubt they trademarked the generic term 'Princess' (unless it was a product name). They could object, as Pam said. Interesting to know the facts.

I thought Princess Cruises was going to have an issue w/that name and it appears they have. I wonder if Princess trademarked every possible Princess name.

I am actually going to take Princess Cruises side on this.

They have given their ships a name followed by Princess for years. The term Princess after the name identifies the ship as a Princess vessel. It is like a trade mark or logo that identifies these ships as unique.

I believe Princess has every right to the monopoly on the title Princess. They used it first and have been using it since.

It would be like calling a ship "name?" of the seas. In that case it is unique to RCCL and RCCL should have exclusive rights to that title.

I actually think the company who tried to have its name end in Princess showed more cheek than Princess by trying to benefit from a reputation Princess has built up over the years. I think they only did it to confuse people into believing it was a Princess ship in order to attract more customers.

I really don't think Caspi would have named the vessel purposely to attract more passengers, just as unlikely as Princess Cruises naming Coral Princess to attract custom from Coral Princess Cruises. Caspi market to a small sector and one which is very much more likely to wish to sail a 'home grown' line rather than anything else; so any confusion or connection with Princess Cruises may even have been against them.

'of the seas' is different, it's only been used by RCCL. Princess is a name used for many ships the world over, and always has been. I don't think Princess Cruises will get very far in asking the owners of Ocean Princess to rename her.

Then there are vessels such as Princess Danae, but maybe Princess Cruises are not interested in the name being that way around. I just hate it when big companies force smaller ones to change names; also the IOC with Olympic anything. I see no competition between any Princess Cruises vessel and Caspi's Dream Princess, just as there is no competition for Princess Cruises with Coral Princess Cruises in Aus, there is no confusion. Why did Princess Cruises not object at the outset...

Have Birka Line also been asked to rename Birka Princess? It could get silly.

Pam

since i have started to work at Caspi since the last mounths, i had the chance to ask why the name of the ship has been changed....
the answere was that "caspi is not willing to have problems with other lines, and the policy is to stay away from any scandals and souing"

to my opinion "dream princess" is far more beautifull than just "dream"

I still think Princess should have the rights to the title Princess after any given name for a cruise ship.

If it was the other way around and they had Princess before the name then Princess cruises should not complain.

Perhaps the line should translate Princess into another language and use that name.

I strongly feel like the title of "of the seas", "Princess" is unique to Princess cruises started using it first like RCCL used that sentence first. Alot of cruise lines have means of identifying themselves like P&O ending their ships in "A" until they named Artemis!

"of the Seas" is a unique combination of words tagged to the name of the ship and that is what RCI could trade mark.

If Princess Cruises had the word 'Princess' at the beginning of the name of the ship, i.e. ...

-Carnival Spirit
-Norwegian Jewel
-Crystal Symphony
-Seven Seas Navigator
-Disney Magic
-Costa Fortuna
-Seaboun Pride
-Windstar, Windsong, etc.

...I could see their point. Trademarking a logo would be a similar situation (like the Seawitch) or a phrase (The Fun ships), but I cant see bullying every ship comany wanting to use the word 'Princess'.

At least in Austria it is not possible to protect a generally used word or term like Princess by copyright. (only as logo - but not the word) Many years ago Audi had already problems getting the copyright for quattro.

Maybe they could just rename her Sundream.

It's a tricky one this. But I do tend to agree anything Princess and you automatically think of Princess Cruises.

Copyright and trademarks are not the same, don't get them confused. Copyright covers works, such as: literary, photographic, artistic, etc. Trademarks cover brand names, product names, slogans, etc. There is also patents, but those are to do with inventions, processes, etc.

I know the difference - but you still could not protect a common word like Princess - only as a logo - which means a specific graphical appearance (font etc.) - this of course would not hinder me to use the word Princess with another font etc. - a word (in whichever appearance) can only be protected if it is unique, new or a name.

Their is a beautiful resort in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico that was recently renamed 'Dreams'. It was originally part of the famous Mexican Camino Real chain of hotels. I guess the new owners like the name as well.

I think they should call her Caspian Dream or rename her Sundream, yes!

What about a number of years ago Gerry Herrods Ocean Cruise Lines had the name Ocean Princess placed on his ship then now sailing as the Emerald for Louis. And Ironically she was used as one of the ships to launch Princess Cruises back in the late 60's chartered from Costa and marketed as "Princess Italia"! How odd!
