Does anybody know a more in-depth history of these two ships? I know they were both container ships at first and that they were converted to passenger ships, but what years were they built and if they were built exclusively for Sweden's Johnson Line or another company? Also, I am wondering if their hulls were constructed in Sweden , Europe or in the United States?

I have been on the Costa Clasica and the Cost Victoria and they were both wonderful vessels. I’m planning a future cruise on Costa and am considering these two vessels rather than their new mega-ships.

They were built in Finland (Wärstilä) as container ships named Axel Johanson and Annie Johanson in 1970. (..do I really remeber this right? Maybe someone can look into a book)

They were intended for a conversion for Regency Cruises, but this never happened. Costa rebuilt them in 1990 (Marina) and 1992 (Allegra).

I was on the ALLEGRA and, although her interiors are very nice, she is the most unstable ship I've ever been on. Even in the smoothest of seas, she rolls like crazy.

On top of that they are two of the ugliest ships ever to be built/re-built. It seems like the designers TRIED to make them ugly.

I think they are pretty well designed and certainly original - less boxy than most other ships.
