Lawyers offer to file suit against cruise ship owners - Soliciting clients among Star Princess passengers
April 7, 2006

A FLORIDA-BASED law firm is soliciting clients to file a class action lawsuit against the operators of the cruise ship that caught fire en route to Montego Bay last month.

The firm - Lawyers and Settlements - has issued an invitation, through its website, to passengers who were on the Star Princess cruise ship to submit their claim for a possible class action suit.

One man died of a heart attack, and several other passengers were injured when the fire engulfed three floors of the Star Princess as it travelled into Jamaican waters on March 23.

The ship was en route to Montego Bay from Grand Cayman when a fire reportedly broke out in the passenger accommodations and later spread to adjacent cabins.

INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION

The incident has attracted international attention, with former chairman of the United States National Transportation Safety Board, Jim Hall, calling for a criminal investigation into the incident.

But the local agent for the cruise line has stoutly defended the crew's performance during the emergency.

It is not yet known whether any of the passengers has taken up the offer to file a lawsuit against the cruise ship operator.

The Star Princess was carrying 1,123 crew members and 2,690 passengers when the fire occurred.

The Star Princess is a Princess Cruises vessel owned by the Carnival Corp.

How pathetic. The only people who may be entitled to compensation are those who were injured. The rest received flights home, Hotel stays, meals, refunds and discounts on future cruises-that is enough IMO.

Holy Mackarel!,here we go,let's SUE!,from what I've
seen and read about this incident,I'll give Princess Cruises the thumbs up for the way the fire was handled, both during, and after the event, and as per
usual the hideous head of litigation pops up,if any one takes up these lawyers offer, then I don't know
what!,here's hoping no one does, that'll show 'em

We do not know a lot about this incident - but this was more seriouse than e.g. bad food or a skipped port. So I have more understanding that some people want to go to court - altough going to court should be the last measure - and of course it seems to be very probalbe that it was not the fault of Princess - but of course 'we' only estimate that - we do not KNOW that. (I am not familiar with U.S. law - in we have a complaint against 'unknow' culprit)

Only the result of a proper investigation will reveal this to us what really happened. Maybe a passenger is responsible - maybe some crew members or even Princess (I do not beleive that) - or maybe it was nobodies fault! (Yes, this is possible! There is not always someone to blame!)

In the end it's the lawyers who make all the $$$ for their FEES. Those filing get peanuts.
In this case all the facts have yet to be told.
Princess by all accounts did a fine job considering all the damage.

The sad part is we all knew this was going to happen. I hope no one takes them up on it , but some stupid greedy person who thinks they will make a lot of money will. Just sad.

I was actually on the ship, and my room was very close to where the fire started. Everything was completely destroyed. While Princes has been cooperating to some degree with reimbursing me, they have not been fast or easy to work with by any means.

As for a Class Action lawsuit. I have heard mixed reports from other passengers as to when the fire started. If the rumors I heard are accurate then there could be an arguement for neglect or endangerment by Princess for allowing passengers to stay sleeping in their rooms for that long before the alarms were sounded. I know when I was woken up at just before 3 AM by a crew member banging on my door, no alarms were going off. When I was rushed from my room the hall way was already filled with smoke. It was not until more than 10 minutes later when we were in our muster station sitting and waiting that we heard any alarm. From my experience that was the first time the general emergency alarm was sounded.

I had friends on board wtih their kids and they had nothing but positives to say about how quickly the crew reacted. It will take time to sort of things because Princess has to go through their insurance company and you know hwo that is.

All a lawsuit will do is make some lawyer rich, get a lot of headlines and it is amazing how people's stories start to change when they think they can get money.

we were on the Star Princess too. A-deck, in the middle of the whole mess. Cabin & contents totally trashed. I have nothing but good things to say about the crew, I think they did very well. I wondered at the time about the lack of alarms and concluded the ship's officers felt they needed time to get the guides in position, else there could have been pandimonium. As it was, we headed out of our room around 3:00, some smoke in the hall, and no crew in place at the stairwells. Happily we kept our wits about us & went straight to our muster station. I think it would be a complete shame to have a class action suit against Princess. I believe this is one of the things wrong with this society, a rush to litigation. I think Princess will do "right" by those onboard. I also believe many onboard will look at this as a chance to get rich... claiming those gold Rolex's etc. I guess that's just human nature.

Law suit and passenger ships are old as the trade itself. Back in the liner days companny's have huge jurist departments. Wich handel al the lawsuites and complains made by passengers. Story told by an HAL employe. That after each voyage liner ore cruise lawyers where standing on the outside of the pier in Hoboken to find passengers.

In this case it's not totally strange that this would happen. I hope so that this time passengers and Princess would find away to settle without legal actions.

Greetings Ben.
