The bad luck continues with PACIFIC SKY!

P&O passenger killed in jet-ski accident
April 7, 2006

A 20-year-old woman from Victoria has been killed in a jet-ski accident in Malaysia.

A spokesman for the Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Teresa Gambaro, says two other Australians suffered broken bones and back injuries when two jet-skis collided off the coast near Panang late yesterday.

She says the High Commission is making urgent inquiries and consular support staff have spoken to the family.

The three were on a cruise with P&O Pacific Sky.

A spokesman for P&O says the two women who suffered minor injuries are on their way back to Australia.

He says the company has sent its condolences to the dead woman's family.

Aussie killed in Malaysian powerski crash
By Jordan Chong
April 7, 2006

A 20-year-old Victorian woman has died in a power-ski crash while on a cruise off the coast of Malaysia.

Another two Victorian women, aged 19 and 20, who were also on the other power-ski, suffered minor injuries in the crash.

A Mexican man riding with the woman who died was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The women were passengers on the Pacific Sky cruise ship, which was on a stopover in Penang as part of a seven-night cruise from Singapore.

Malaysia's Star newspaper identified the woman as Catherine Shepherd, but the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) was unable to confirm this.

According to a local police officer, the woman died of "internal injuries".

"A post-mortem by forensic pathologist Dr Bhupinder Singh found that Shepherd died from internal injuries. The impact of the crash was so great that one of her fractured ribs punctured her heart," State CID Chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Azman Yusof told The Star.

"Two Red Crescent personnel, who were on stand-by at the request of the operator, administered first aid but failed to revive Shepherd," he added.

The Mexican man, who suffered head injuries and a fractured left ankle, is in a serious but stable condition in the intensive care unit at the Gleneagles Medical Centre, the newspaper reported.

The newspaper also reported the power-skis were supplied by an unlicensed operator.

P&O Cruises Australia, the parent company of the Pacific Sky, said in a statement that it was co-operating with local authorities investigating the incident.

A DFAT spokesman said the Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur was making urgent inquiries and consular support staff had spoken to the family of the dead woman.

"The Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur is making inquiries,'' the spokesman said.

"The Malaysian High Commission in Canberra is also liaising with us and relatives of the dead woman and those injured,'' he said.

The spokesman said the two Victorian women who suffered minor injuries were on their way back to Australia.

Unfortunately that ship is getting very bad news coverage lately.

In Sydney, chanel 7's Today Tonight program, has been reporting drugs are rampant on P&O ships since the coronial inquest of that dead woman found onboard in 2002.

They even went to the extent of hiring someone to pose as a passenger, then they filmed him entering his cabin and finding an envelope with the title "with complements staff of P&O" he then opened the envelope for the camera and produced drugs.

Incidently the hired this passenger to sail on Pacific Star and they showed other clips of passengers behaving like hooligans in a bar. The bar was later identified as a bar in Vila and not on the ship.

I dont beleive that P&O staff hand out drugs to passengers as this current affairs program made out.

Has anyone else in Australia who watches that Sydney based program seen it and have any opinion of it?

The media will have a field day with this.

I did watch TT when it was on, and I also saw them make it clear the following the night that the bar scene wasn't onboard the ship when P&O complained. I wouldn't be completely surprised if the crew are involved in certain things like that. I know for sure that there must be some illicit substances brought onboard by passengers, after all, most of the people that go on them, in my experience of three cruises, seem to be your younger typical 'hooligans' that do crazy stuff. What was filmed by the undercover reporter wasn't at all surprising, they are after all 'fun ships' made for the younger crowd. They're fun isn't necessarily mine though, and I don't know how soon I'll be taking another cruise with P&O Aus.

I didn't see the today tonight story, but I was on the Pacific Star cruise featured on the story. Not sure why TT had it in for P&O. We were speaking to the security guard on board who said that the reporter had bought the drugs in Suva when the ship called there, addressed them in an envelope to himself, slipped them under his cabin door and then called security and filmed the result. The usual TT standard of not letting the truth get in the way of a good story! The bar featured was in Vila, a well known bar frequented by passengers and overseas tourists alike.
We had a trouble free, relaxing cruise holiday and saw no evidence of any trouble at all.

I had suspected that the story about staff giving that passenger drugs in an envelope was invented.

There are so many factors that do not make sense. 1. On all the cruise's I have been on no letters are signed by "P&O staff" - they usually are with complements Executive Purser etc. 2. Letters are never posted under cabin doors. 3 why would the reporter immediately go into the toilet to open the letter on the toilet seat? He knew what was in it before hand.

Although I disagree with that TT report, can anyone tell me what a south pacific cruise is really like. I have only sailed on Aurora, Oriana and Sapphire Princess.

After seeing video evidence of the passengers I would not want to go on a cruise with young hooligans. I am 24 myself, but I enjoy relaxing cruises with sensible people who dont get out of control and behave like animals once effected by alcohol.

If that is what passengers are really like on south pacific cruises I would not go on one. Even the discription of those riffraff and pesants described in the corinial inquest that drugged that poor woman, I would not want to go on a crusie with rubbish and trash like that as fellow passengers.

Can anyone tell me if any decent people do go on south pacific cruises with P&O and have a good time with decent people? or is that drugged woman incident and the other clips of passengers a rare event?

My latest cruise was at the end of Feb this year. The first dance party was the PJ party, to which my friends and I attended, we're all 18, and we had an absolute ball. Then the DJ machine thing broke, so the music stopped, so people began to chant and riot, swinging off the lamp posts. Someone brought on those damn drums and they made their own music while security looked on helpless. Hundreds of people, and no where near as many members of security. I have little video recordings from my digital camera that I can maybe post somewhere. I'm sure this doesn't happen all of the time, especially when the cruises are full of families, but this time, the majority of cruisers were in their early twenties. One group of my friends stayed on Main Deck (Pacific Sun) and I stayed with another in one of the suites on Verandah Deck. Apparently every night there were people running through the halls creating a lot of noise and disturbing passengers from their sleep. We experiened none of that where we were obviously since there were only about ten cabins up there. The Captain had to repeatedly make announcements for the passengers to not behave in this way, it felt like school camp, a bloody expensive school camp and so to me, ruined the whole feel of the holiday. It was a great time away, but I seriously think it is a little too rough around the edges, maybe it was just my cruise!! Maybe it wasn't!

I've been on 6 south pacific cruises, the first on Fair Princess in 1997 and the latest on Pacific Star last week, and in between a couple on Pacific Sky and one on Pacific Sun. We've never had any trouble on our cruises..I'm 35, my partner is 33. We usually go to the parties on deck and take part in most activities, and the crowd has always been well behaved - sure there's drinking and the odd crazy person, but security are watching them. I guess it depends on the individual cruise. Generally, the shorter the cruise the more younger people, so therefore the more likelihood of trouble. I have heard and read similar stories of people having noisy passengers in their neighbouring cabins, but considering the number of people on board I think that's not a widespread problem. the staff are usually very good at keeping things well behaved. That's been my experience anyway.

I suppose its the shorter south pacific cruises where you get the odd trouble maker eg that weekend cruise where Pacific Sun had to return to Sydney to disembark some man.

An interesting experience I had was on 12 night Sapphire Princess. There were a handful of people my age from 23 to 30 and we all had a great time, and even got mixing with the crew and theatre performers who were the only ones in the night clubs.

I found the majority of passengers on Sapphire Princess were older than 50 and went to bed after 10pm. The ship was literally dead apart from us young ones in the night club.

The only problem I found were teenagers 13 to 18 constatnly being hunted out of the public rooms by security. They would come in, start smoking, feet on tables, dressed in wet swimmers - not long after they arrived people complained and security was quick to get rid of them. Even by the pool at night we witnessed a 14 year old girl who would perform strip tease for her other teenage friends and collect ice from the Horizon Court and place it (we all know where I mean).

Generally allot of passengers were not amused by these teenagers roaming the ship and wondered where their parents were. Unlike what I hear with P&O south pacific cruises, I can tell you that Princess staff acted very quickly to deal with that teenage group that were causing problems each night.

I would not mind trying Pacific Dawn (Regal Princess) when it operates out of Sydney. It is a good ship. The only problem for me is value for money and will you get just as a relaxing holiday as P&O UK and Princess. If those reports of hooliganism are true and it is widespread then it would be best to avoid it in peak seasons and shorter voyages.

Am I right in assuming that the best time to go on a P&O south pacific cruise is in the off peak season and on a longer voyage to avoid the trouble makers?

Yes Pacific Dawn does look good, we're thinking of going on that too when it comes down here.
I think you will have a relaxing cruise holiday on a P&O south pacific cruise, but yes if you want to really ensure that happens, the longer cruises are probably better. Although having done a 7 night Sky one out of Brisbane, there wasn't too much trouble on that. The last one we did was 12 nights, and two-thirds of the passengers would have been 50+.

I think it's hard to determine if one will be a good one or not. My first cruise, I was too young to notice anything and I was with my cousins who were the same age for the entire thing. My second cruise was six years later and I was 17, I went to most of the deck parties and there was never a problem at all. My last one however, as I said, was a bit of a hooligan's delight. It wasn't terrible, but I think it did make it seem like a school camp as I said. It was my first time away from home by myself (well with my friends) and we had an absolute ball not being under 'parental supervision' lol, but we still thought some people took it a step too far. Each to their own!!

Just avoid 'schoolies' cruises, my friends and I chose this one in particular because we thought it would be a little less hectic since it was after schoolies, so we were surprised when most of the people on board were around about 20'ish. If you want a safe bet, go on a cruise when the Uni semester starts!

interesting stories! my only P&O Aus experience was back in 2000 on pac sky. No problems encountered then. The cruise before us however was a nightmare according to staff. There were drunken vandals chucking plastic chairs/furniture over board, ripping signage off cabin doors, and also throwing a whole lot of door keys over board. So when it came to us embarking the next day a lot of people only had one key for the cabin instead of 4 sets!

I think P&O have done a good thing by running 2? schoolies cruises exclusive for young travellers. In my opinion this is good as they are well supervised and it stops any poor 80yr old couple from accidently booking the same cruise!
