Holland America Line's ms Rotterdam Named 2006 Ship of the Year by World Ocean & Cruise Liner Society
March 22, 2006

SEATTLE, -- Holland America Line's ms Rotterdam was named 2006 Ship of the Year in the World Ocean & Cruise Liner Society (WOCLS) annual cruise ship survey by its members. This is the third time the company's flagship has received ship of the year honors.

"As our flagship, the ms Rotterdam has a special meaning for all of us at Holland America Line," said Stein Kruse, president and chief executive officer. "We are honored that the members of the World Ocean and Cruise Liner Society feel the same way. This is a testament to the ship operation and service level and its crew."

Thomas Cassidy, editor of the organization's newsletter, noted, "In order for a ship to become our 'Ship of the Year,' it takes an exceptional consistency of high marks in each of the categories."

The Rotterdam previously received ship of the year honors in 1999 and 2000. In this year's survey, Holland America Line's ms Prinsendam also garnered top votes in the categories for Best Itinerary and Best Shore Excursions for showcasing ports of call and shore activities that were engaging, unordinary and diverse.

WOCLS is a 24-year-old organization comprised of thousands of experienced cruisers who average taking two cruises a year. The society reviews all cruise ships annually, receiving more report cards on ships this year than during any previous survey.

Wonderful...I cruised her from NYC to Montreal and she is indeed a great ship. She is a nice little secret among the mass of flashy pretenders.

The WOCLS annual survey is not a real survey of its membership. It is a compilation of the results of the "cruise report cards" that many members send in after taking a cruise. Based on the overly-high scores that are routinely reported it would appear that many, if not most, members don't even read the instructions. One simply cannot travel on the same ship 6 times a year like some members do, send in a report for each cruise and continually rate it in all areas with scores that are defined to mean "greatly exceeded expectations". (Such ratings imply that the high-scoring ships get better and better every week ad nauseum). Yet that is exactly what some members do, The only real restriction on reports cards is that one is not supposed to send in 2 reports for the same cruise. Until the PTB at WOCLs take measures to prevent what amounts to nothing more than ballot box stuffing (vote early and often), one needs to take the results of this so-called survey with the proverbial grain of salt.
