quote: Meyer Werft lays AIDAdiva keel3/3/2006The keel-laying ceremony for AIDAdiva, the first of three AIDA Cruises newbuilds, took place today at Meyer Werft in Papenburg. The winner of the AIDA ship naming contest, Sabine Mattenheimer, a travel agent from Bavaria, placed a lucky penny under the first of 55 total blocks. The ceremony also served as the occasion to reveal the name AIDAdiva. The vessel, first of the new 68,500gt Sphinx class, is scheduled for delivery in Spring 2007. ‘We are pleased that we, as a German shipyard, can implement this newbuilding project for a German cruise operator and German passengers,’ said Bernard Meyer, ceo and managing partner of Meyer Werft. Each of the Sphinx-series vessels will have a length overall of 252 meters and a beam of 32.2 meters. Double-occupancy capacity is 2,030 passengers. Four large MaK diesel engines will generate a total output of approximately 50,000 hp for a service speed of almost 22 knots. The two other AIDA newbuildings will follow in Spring 2008 and Spring 2009.
