Many years ago, on another here-to-be-unnamed cruise forum, we discussed some things we figured you'd never see on a cruise ship. They were:

1. An ice skating rink. We figured no one goes on a cruise to be cold, not to mention the obvious motion problems.

2. A pool table. We figured that the motion of the ship would just about make this impossible.

3. A bowling alley. See #2. In addition, bowling is considered by many to be a "low class" sport, so seeing it on a cruise ship wasn't too likely.

OK, the know about the RCCL ships having skating rinks. I haven't seen them personally, but I'll take their word for it. I don't go skating ashore, so there's no reason I would do it on a ship.

The Radiance of the Seas had the first pool table we had ever seen on a ship. It was amazing to watch it operate. We understand one of the executives actually slept on it when the seas got rough on the initial crossing of the ship from Europe to the US, before it went into service.

And now...NCL has announce the Norwegian Pearl will have a bowling alley. Four of them, in fact.

It's a good thing none of us went into the prophet biz!

I love NCL,...they always make it sound as though they've come up with something new.

Someone should inform Mr. Vietch that FRANCE of 1912 had a bowling alley,....

I'm waiting for Go Kart racing. With electric motors of course-Save the Waves etc. Maybe the Genesis class ship(s) will have this vs the Royal Promenade or ice rink in the center of the ship.
What next???

You do not have to be a skater in order to enjoy the ice rings on RCI ships. I heard that the ice shows are fantastic, although I personally have yet to see them.

Yes, there are plans on the boards for a ship (ie. Pinnacle Project?) which has a roller coaster on board.

You have got to be kidding.
That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever head of!!!!
Ocean liners have deteriorated over the years. They are no longer elegant but at best as Carnival says "fun ships" for gawky tasteless tourists

We know, we know, but remember that these are not ocean liners any more. They are floating resorts, and Carnival, among other lines, is competing with places like Las Vegas and Orlando (BTW, both have roller coasters!) for the vacation dollars.

You mean cruise ships!

It's not all bad news. Lets not forget that Carnival built the QM2 wich is very tasteful.

Any yes, RCI productions (dance) shows are some of the best afloat, but the Ice Show is FANTASTIC - and I'm not gawky and tasteless.

My money is on Carnival eventually coming out with a ship that is movie-themed. Each public room will be done after some major motion picture. For example, the Longest Yard Sports Bar, a Narnia-based children's area (although I don't think Disney would allow a competing line to use anything from Narnia), the Moulin Rouge Show Lounge, the Star Wars Arcade, etc. The only issue would be getting the rights to decorate such rooms with film-reminiscent scenery, so we can all feel like we're on the set.

But on the other hand, this really woudn't be a stretch for Carnival. Heck, if you're going to think about putting a roller-coaster on a ship, why not a log flume while you're at it? In fact a complete "amusements" area including a haunted mansion. Since we're talking tacky, how about a freak show, too?

And Genesis will be so big, they may as well refer to the Promenade as Central Park.

Have you been aboard the FASCINATION? Her public areas are based on the movies, complete with mannequins of movie stars scattered around the Promenade Deck. There is a "Passage to India" Bar, "Tara Library" from Gone with the Wind, "Diamonds are Forever Discotheque," "Bogart's Cafe", "Hollywood Boulevard," "Beverly Hills Bar," and "Puttin on the Ritz Lounge".

Various rooms on other Carnival ships have movie-based themes, as well.

Well, for those of you who saw the closing ceremonies of the Torino Olympic Games last night, as those guys were "flying" over that pit with the 125 MPH wind coming out of it, I couldn't help but think, "Now THERE'S a cool thing to use a ship's atruim for! I'd try it, and love watching it!"

I get very irritated about how these new cruise ships are built while the classic liners are slowly vanishing. These new ships, especially Carnival, are so tacky it's almost offensive. Of course there are a few classy ships being built(QM2, Queen Victoria,) and hopefully the old classics will remain for a while longer(especially France.)

I suppose we will lose most of the 'classics' within the next decade. However, younger ships will start to look like 'classics'.

Aurora and Oriana are well on the way to becoming classics.

Sadly, we actually lost them already a long time ago - concerning 'classic' ships there is not much left to lose these days.

You know, I thought after I posted that, that the concept was the slightest bit familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on whether they had already had a ship out like that, and if so, which one. Thanks.

Alas, get used to it. It doesn't get better. Although I agree that Cunard has something special in QM2 and QV.

Very true, the real classics(Aquatania, Normandie, SSUS, America, Ile de France, ect) vanished long ago. The ships from the sixties and seventies are now the oldest ones left and have become the new "classics."
