Report by Peter Woodman, PA
18 January 18, 2006

...Meanwhile, passengers on another UK vessel, the 69,000-tonne Oriana, have been hit by the Norovirus stomach bug while on a 100-day world cruise, which started when the P&O Cruises' vessel sailed from Southampton on January 8.

The bug, which causes vomiting and diarrhoea, has laid low a number of the 1,700 passengers on board.

The vessel was able to dock at Athens yesterday and was calling at Port Said in Egypt today.

The port of Athens had refused to allow another P&O vessel, the Aurora, to dock in November 2003 after the Aurora had been badly affected by the Norovirus bug.

P&O Cruises said today: "There has been an increased incidence of a mild gastrointestinal illness among passengers on board the current sailing of Oriana.

"We have confirmed the illness is caused by Norovirus (formerly known as Norwalk Virus) which is the most common cause of gastroenteritis in the developed world. Only the common cold is reported more often. There are currently outbreaks throughout the UK."

P&O went on: "We work closely with local and international public health agencies and have developed and implemented our extensive sanitisation programme on board to interrupt the spread of illness.

"Passengers who are unwell are being treated at no cost and have been asked to comply with the ship's doctor's instructions. This includes a brief isolation in their cabin until they are non contagious."

I don't see the news value of this.

Cruise ships deal with this virus all the time, just like hotels and other places where many people gather. Once a while such articles pop up just because of the sensational aspect it happens on a cruise ship... -and remarkable is that it most often are British ships mentioned.

My experience is that excessive amounts of ill people are the result of dinner/dance excursions or groups of passengers visiting the same restaurant ashore. This increases the potentially infected areas throughout the ship. Proper hand washing is the best remedy, especially before having a meal.

The same happened when I was on the QE2 last summer.
Compulsary handcleaning upon entering the dining room. No one was alllowed to pick up food themselves in the buffet areas. Staff was cleaning hand rails all the time. etc etc

I wondered if this would have been a news item if ti wouldn't have been a worldcruise. Like previously mentioned, nothing special anymore these days

I have seen where you can by an over the counter remedy prior to going on any trip. Not sure of the name of the product-maybe someone can help on this. Your suppose to start taking this 2 weeks before going on vacation/holiday.
It may be some vitamin C derivative.

Some of the UK press are carrying stories about the 'curse' of Auora. Thr Daily Mail almost has a full page dedicated to the ship and its bad 'omens'.

Very silly!

Have they got nothing better to fill their allocated text space today then? Perhaps they have got bored with filling it with details of the numerous hospital ward closures re Norovirus in the last month. Too common an occurance on land.

Forsty 4 maybe you are thinking of an herbal extract called Airborne? which is spouted forth whenever anyone mentions this. It is supposedly able to assist one to build up the immune system and fight germs. No idea what it is supposed to do to prevent a virus taking hold, but that's the power of advertising, the name is on everyone's tongue.
