quote:Gastro virus on Diamond PrincessNovember 30, 2005Doctors are battling to contain a highly-contagious gastrointestinal virus among 2618 passengers and 1115 crew on the luxury cruise liner Diamond Princess as the ship heads for Australia. A total of 179 Australians are on the ship which is on a 16-nights cruise from Beijing to Singapore before starting a series of cruises from Sydney to Auckland on January 8. Some passengers and crew have been asked to stay in their cabins to prevent the virus spreading, and strict hygiene rules for food handling have been imposed throughout the ship. Passengers have been urged to avoid using public toilets on the ship, to wash their hands 3frequently and thoroughly2 with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, and to avoid touching their mouth. First warnings of possible problems from the Norovirus came as passengers boarded the fully-booked ship in Beijing on November 20. In a 'health advisory' delivered to every cabin, Dr Grant Tarling, Vice President, Fleet Medical Officer for Princess Cruises, said there was currently a world-wide increase in the incidence of a mild gastrointestinal illness caused by the highly-contagious Norovirus which had affected a small number of cruise ships. Passengers on Diamond Princess awoke to a second health advisory two days into the Beijing-Singapore cruise. A third advisory on day four confirmed an 'increased incidence' with 37 passengers affected, and called for 'meticulous personal hygiene' to prevent the spread of the virus. The ship's popular Horizon's Court buffet, which handles thousands of meals daily, has banned passengers from serving themselves and instead, has ordered staff to wear plastic gloves and serve each passenger individually. Special hand sanitising units are in use throughout key areas of the ship. Dr Tarling said the virus caused a mild stomach upset with vomiting and diarrhoea lasting up to three days and remained contagious for 48 hours after recovery. Older people with health problems and the very young were worst at risk, he said. The 115,000 gross ton Diamond Princess which has been in service less than 18 months, will spend 10 days in dry dock in Singapore for maintenance before leaving for Sydney on December 20.Glyn May on board Diamond Princess

These incidents only become "news" because the media hear about it and make it into something big. I just returned from the transatlantic crossing of Brilliance of the Seas, Barcelona to Miami. We had a high number of people with gastrointestinal illness on board, and people were confined to their cabins for 48 hours. The ship reached a "code yellow" status (I never did hear if they reached code red, but I think not.)
Anyway, I never read about it or saw in on TV, apparently since no one notified the media about it, but these events usually become "news", at least locally here in South Florida, even though they are commonplace.

The Zuiderdam did a dry dock right after it's first year of cruise.
