Wow, an extensive review Matt – well done!

It is interesting that ‘Black Prince’ still has such a hard core following and is as popular (more popular?) than ever. Of course she is totally outdated, but so are most of her passengers (No offence intended). I'm no longer a young man, but I've met Olsen regualrs that are twice my age!
BP regulars are the sort of folk that regards a 30,000 ton ship as too big.

I’ve not cruise on her, but I think Pam had a better experience with the food? I’ve certainly had pretty good food on her sisters, although hardly gourmet standard.

As for ‘cheap’, I know the mini cruise was, but her regular one and two week cruise are hardly sold at bargain basement prices. Considering the ship was probably paid for years ago and certainly has not has a series of multi-million pound refits, she’s moderately expensive in my opinion.

The 'Black Watch' and 'Braemar' are more comfortable ships, in my opinion, and ARE well worth a try.

Yes Malcolm, we had excellent food, but then we had a table for 2, so no dreary tablemates; no-one would have been seen dead in a track suit.. sheesh everyone dressed up for each of the 3 nights, and there were many younger folk & kids as it was pre Christmas rather than the middle of Nov.

Matts I gather you did not have a choice of cabin at that price? You ended up in the 'dressing room' Well 611 directly opposite was anyway, for the lady [a well known one too] who occupied the corner cabin next door, for a 2 week cruise my parents went on some years back, so has always been a standing joke here. She had hanging racks on wheels full of clothes. Best cabins are down on Marina Deck. Even our inside had enough storage space for well more than 2 weeks+

I assume 'Gladys' thought she was being humorous asking about keks as you were a lot younger and perhaps 'au naturelle'?

Why wasn't the CC registered in the terminal? Computers down? I can't remember now on BP, but certainly for BW they were. I have been on several cruises where it was just left up to individuals to register their cards whenever they wanted to during the cruise. At least there weren't 1800 of you all forced into one channel to register your cards once aboard, before being permitted to go to one's cabin, which happened to us not so long ago, because of terminal PC problems... it was horrendous.

Pam

Fortunately my family are northerners and so I thought keks was funny. When she asked me that I suggested she join us in the Jacuzzi to find out! - naturally one was properly attired.

I don't know why the cc wasn't registered because there was absolutely no queue or anything. That said they were operating exclusively on paper.

As for the cabin choice, it was small and the cheapest onboard probably for 2 reasons. Size and the fact that it had upper and lower bunks, I got the impression that many would not be able to climb up.....

In fact despite its size we were delighted because it was one of the original ferry cabins and we went to seek out the heritage of the vessel.

I wasn't joking with arthritis aerobics - 10am day 3. There was also 'water retention massage' available in the spa. The shop was selling Ralgex prominently (rather than Durex I've seen on some ships ).

A further point in Olsen's favour are the VERY cheap prices onboard. £4 for a photo, 50p non alcoholic drink, 1.50 G&T - you aren't ripped off here.

Fiar play to Olsen, they seem to be providing exactly what their pax want and presumably that is what inspires their loyalty. However I also know that I am not their target, from the activities side and also foood quality side.

Thanks Matt, my fault for not seeing the humour in your text. I enjoyed the review, seems a shame things are so obviously being run down. Although she won't, without a lot of money spent on her, be able to sail past 2010, there is no excuse for sloppiness, or rude staff [I wonder if they are 'newbies' being trained up for when Boudicca is sailing? If so, they need to be chivvied up somewhat]. It's nearly 4 years now since our trip, unbelievable really, and am sad she's not the same, we had an enjoyable short trip. It will be one for you to remember anyway.

Just think, the cost was less than my 'worse' Duchess trip. I think I'd have preferred BP with an extra night and bad food, but then wouldn't have experienced the non-delights of filth in a cabin.

Pam

The comments in the 2005 Berlitz Guide were thus: "...many passengers [feel] that the ship now operates more for the crew than the passengers."; "Standards of product delivery and professionalism have fallen over the last few years...".

Matts' experiences seem to bear them out.

So, Matts, you've cruised on Norwegian Jewel and Black Prince in the same year; what a difference!

It has certainly been a year of variety, starting out with QM2, going to the Black Prince via easyCruiseOne and Norwegian Jewel, with a few others in between. And the year isn't over yet...

In truth I enjoy most ships I'm on, even if I think the product is rubbish. Ships are a microscopic society and watching behaviour and how the service is delivered is half the fun for me.

If you can run you are not an Olsen regular!

Mind you I did see some Olsen passengers run the length of the deck once. Cakes were being served.

You certainly have point there Malcolm !

Mind you, there is a far, far more ferocious, intimidating and devillish area - strewn with blood and gore - where innocents crawl from that place as tortured beings, psychologically scarred for eternity . . . . . . . . .

. . . . . . it's called . . . .

. . . . . . . . . . . . .

. . . .The Launderette . . . . . . arghhhh . . .

I notice that Olsen are offering the Black Prince on 18th December; Liverpool - Waterford Ireland, St.Malo - France, to Southampton from £112.

These winter cruises are sold very cheaply, indeed.

The cost of Liverpool/Southampton though, may be prohibitive to some. I would jump if I could make the dates, but can't
