I am trying to cruise to the Norwegian Fjords during May of 2006. I have a recent post asking about a possible cruise on the Deutschland and I thank all of you that provided some really helpful information. I am also aware of a 13 day cruise on the Black Prince (Fred Olsen) that goes up to the fjords in May 2006. Can anyone offer a comparison between a 13 day cruise on Black Prince and an 8 day on Deutschland? The cruise on Black Prince will cost about half of the fare of the Deutschland. Is the Deutschland that much better? As far as the fjords are concerned the itinerary of Deutschland is probably better, but the itinerary of Black Watch goes to other really nice places as well. The ship is important to me, but to pay double the Deutschland should be really great; wonderful service, great food, an all-around high class experience.

Before I spend what I would normally spend on two vactions to go on Deutschland I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing.

Thanks for your thoughts.

To give you a short awnser: Yes, I would say Deutschland is much 'better' than Black Prince, the difference in the price is justified in this case.

If you look at Black Watch the case is a bit different (I lost my heart to these vessels, sorry) - the Black Watch is a nice ship with a proper promenade deck, an oberservation louge, and a generally very diverse open deck space - one of the best - not unimportant for a cruise to Norway with a lot of 'scenery'. Deutschand is (by far) not offering that (promenade deck etc.), BUT altough I do not like the decor and style of the Deutschland she is - beside the above mentioned things - the much, much, much better ship.

I think the 'Watch' was a typo? If you are comparing Black Prince to Deustschland, and going/judging by your previous comments of the group being catered for, I would suggest you take Deutschland. You will get good food and service on BP, but the ship cannot match Deustschland for those used to more 'classy' & modern surroundings. I personally would prefer BP, but I don't think your group would.

Deutschland is definitely the superior vessel.

That's quite a challenging question! It's a bit like saying "do I buy a ‘Porche’ or a bottom of the range Ford"?

If you mean 'Black Prince', the two ships are like comparing Chalk and Cheese. That's not to say that BP will not be a good experience, but Deutschland will be a higher class one.

The real questions are: are you a Ford or a Porche man? Is money an issue? How important is a longer itinerary?

Don't forget that BP will provide a very British style experience and Deutschland an international one. The two itineraries are very different to.

Lots of ships go to the Fjords. If I were you I would also consider a ship/line or two, between these two poles apart.

I would not say Deutschland is an 'international expierience' - she is German as Black Prince is British.

The Prosche (not Proche - but maybe Malcolm you talk about a different company Ford comparism is maybe going a bit too far and I would not compare Deutschland with a sports car (I know, such a statement lead to a lengthly discussion in another thread) - but as said Deutschland is the overall 'better' ship - Black Prince is a cute, cozy, but not a 'posh' vessel.

BP is Norwegian ship, with many Norwegian crew, offering an experience aimed at Brits. Olsen do not normally sell ex-UK cruises anywhere but the UK.

Deutschland is of course German, but there second 'official' language onboard is English, so I termed that as 'International'. They do sell their cruises internatioanlly.

Some Brits do use the 'Porche' spelling, but lifes to short to argue about cars as well as ship!

Come on, you know what I mean - as if the registry really plays a role today - Black Prince is not really the cliche of a Norwegian ship (whatever this really is)

Like Deilmann, also Fred Olsen is selling it`s cruises outside the U.K. - also cruises from U.K. ports.

I agree tough that it is absolutely not worth to argue about cars. (...but it still is Prosche... )

Black Prince is as Norwegian as I am. And the correct spelling of the car is Porsche.
