I bought a few more models, and thought you all might like to see some pictures. The first image shows the Costa "fleet", with new models of the Fortuna, Europa and Tropicale, joining previously owned ones of Atlantica, Victoria, Classica and Marina.

The next is of the Fairwind of Sitmar Cruises:

the Big Red Boat III, former Eugenio C

The Independence in her final AHC livery

and the Nieuw Amsterdam of 1983

I am especially happy with the Costa ships, as I think they are very attractive.

Fabulous Thad! are these all 1:1250? am very envious of your collection, but my pennies get spent on the cruising! I do not have enough for both sadly.

Yes Pam they are all 1:1250's , and I agree it is hard to collect and cruise as well. I have been doing alot more collecting than cruising lately, but as my cabinet is pretty full, and my choices of models has gotten more and more limited, hopefully I will cruise more and collect less in the near future.

Nice models but as we dismebarked the Marco polo at Barcelona last Friday just astern of the Costa Fortuna - how did they choose that name???? - I was appalled at the totally glazed in stern and promenades that we saw.

Is the only open deck on that thing at funnel level?

The contrast between sixties and millenium ship design was all too apparent and it made me think of changing my name to Victor Meldrew to match my opinion of these awful behemoths.

In Roman mythology FORTUNA was the Goddess of Luck (fortune). She was the daughter of the Roman god Jupiter and is depicted blindfolded with a turning wheel (the wheel of luck or misfortune) next to her.

A bit more info on FORTUNA:

In some pictures and paintings we see her standing on a ball, as a sign of the uncertainty of human fate. Originally, she was the goddess of fertility. There are two ancient sanctuaries: one in Antium and one in Praeneste. She was a very popular goddess, worshiped for a number of things: to invoke a safe return of a ship to finding a suitable husband. In Greece, her counterpart was the goddess Tyche, the Goddess of Fate (see here: Mythography - The Greek Goddess Tyche in Myth and Art). Fortuna is depicted on paintings, frescos, Roman mosaics and old coins. The coins also show her with a rudder or a cornucopia (the horn of plenty).

Pam, neither do I that is why I make the models myself!

Looks great Thad (as always) Typical to see that some of the models look very detailed and some others look bland and simplified.

Onno,
some of the "blandness" comes from over flashing some of the photos. My digital has a tendency to was some of the images out a little. Most of these newest models are pretty well detailed. Some of my others on the other hand are not so strong in that department. I think it is interesting that it is often the painting that makes some of the models look so much more detailed.

Very nice Thad!
Do you get them from the US 1/1250 site?
They had a very good value black hull Andes for $60 but it costs £60 by the time it is sold in the UK!
I tend to buy second hand ones or slightly damaged from the Waterline Ship Shows advertised in www.photrek.co.uk
I can only recommend the fabulous Bowen books about Miniature Merchant Ships.

Louie,
actually I got lucky this time, and another collector, who was thining out his collection, offered them to me, Most were a very good price, much better than if they had been on ebay. The other collector is the one who repainted and customized all most of the models. I was psyched.
