Oriana in her maiden season played a fantastic piece of music over the decks as she left port, and was also used in various news and travel programmes that featured her...

Vangelis "Conquest of Paradise".

Now that is a fantastic piece of music, and every time I hear it I'm reminded of what an impact Oriana had on us Brits when it first arrived in 95.

Captain Ian Gibb, one of P&O's best ever Captain's insisted that it was played on the maiden voyage every time it left port.

While on Fred Olsen's Braemar a very talented band played this track 'live' while we departed from Dover.

Vangelis has come a long way since he was keyboard player in the Greek band 'Aphrodite's Child' in the 1960's and early 1970's, with Demis Roussos on vocals.

Vengelis is probably best known for his 'Chariots of Fire' soundtrack and his work with Yes's 'Jon Anderson' known as 'John and Vangelis'.

Aphrodite's child - which one of them is which?!?

OK, let's have a bit of fun: On which cruise ships might you expect to hear the following songs played as it left port?

a) D:Ream's "Things Can Only Get Better!";

b) The "Ode to Joy" section of the Beethoven's 9th Symphony;

c) Shania Twaine's "I feel just like a woman";

d) "The Macarena";

e) [that song] by Celine Dion; and

(just for Malcolm since he's obviously a fan...)
f) "Goodbye my Love Goodbye" by Demis Roussos

Suggestions, please....

its interesting
i wonder if the taste in music and the music itself on board cruise ships are a pure , defenitive decision of the cruise director? or maybe there are actully orders given by the cruise line to all entertainment teams onboard the ships?

A proper organ might actually be very well suited for open deck live music.

Tom,
Indeed, music played onboard ship could generate a national rift.
Should the music be choosen by the Captain(Company interest), the cruise director(more aware of passengers cultural needs) or else?
Would the Demi Roussos 's tune be played onboard Celebrity ships?
Nana Mouskouri made a late 80's Amerikanis arrival unforgettable!

Ernst,
Indeed, Thompson Celebration "Indigenous", hot, loud piped "South American" music do not seem to melt some Solent onlookers opinion!
A proper band would make it more appropriate, but then how can the Fun starts?

Nope! I though Rod might even do it himself!

Hmm..they are all very hairy and Greek!

I think Demis Roussos is in the middle and Vangelis (real name: Evangelos Papathanassiou) is on the left.

There's more info about the band HERE if you need it.
