I live on the banks of Southampton Water, and whilst relaxing in the garden after seeing "Oceana" and "QE2" sail past I heard some music playing in the distance... it was that awful 70's song "High ho silver lining"!
I thought it was someone with bad taste, but no, it was blaring out over the decks of the "Thomson Celebration"!!!!
Needless to say I won't be going on a TUI cruise...

Rgds,
Andrew

I was on board "Oceana" as she shared Southampton Water with "QE2" and "Thomson Celebration" and can tesify that "Agadoo" was NOT played from "Oceana".

Maybe Mec1 needs to adjust his hearing aid.............

However, it reminds me of sailing from Port Canaveral on RCI "Mariner of the Seas" on the same departure date as a Disney ship. RCI had a live caribbean band on deck, while all we could hear from Disney was records blaring from each speaker.

Sadly a lot of lines think that it is necessary to spoil the departure from a port by playing music via the public announcement system - also rather expensive in this respect not at all luxuriouse lines. (Crystal, Royal Viking)

Live music is perfectly O.K. (On German ships one hears often "Muß I denn zum Städtele hinaus" very, very kitschy and nearly not bearable but it is a tradition on German ships - and on Europa it is usually a live performance)

During a recent Trans the QM2 had a band on deck playing YMCA. The infestation of crap music at sea is almost total.

A better reason not to cruise Celebration is recent toilet and propulsion failure!

We sailed from Le Havre on "France" as Napoleonic fanfares sounded. It was wonderful!

I was down Hythe Marina back in May when she, Golden Princess and QM2 sailed and quite liked that 'Hi Ho Silver Lining'. It made a change. Royal Princess when she sailed for Bremerhaven played 'When The Going Gets Tough (The Tough Get Going)'. I hate the logo on Thompson ships though. Reminds me of that Picasso painting on drugs.

But Hi Ho Silver Lining is a 60's classic! - by Jeff Beck. It was almost the only song he ever sang on at that time (the lead singer in his band was Rod Stewart) but Hi Ho was almost a 'filler' track so Jeff made with the vocal chords. It turned out to be his biggest solo hit in the UK.

It certainly makes me want to cruise with Thomson! I wonder if I can persuade them to play it on Galaxy, as we cruise past the Amalfi coast next June?

well i dont see anything wrong in playing music
during departure . infact a good loved song playing during sail time makes me even more excited. i would love to hear ABBA (my favorite group) onboard.
i remember that in my 2nd cruise in 1994
it was on the Emerald Seas and they were playing the "love boat" song and at the time it was fantastic!
(yet a pure kitch) when considering the fact the Pacific Princess was my perfect ship and i enjoyed seeing the series few times a week

As this link shows it is obviously impossible to find a piece of music which is appreciated by the majority of the passengers - so either something very, very original or silence seems to be the best one can do.

Sorry Guys, maybe noy upmarket enough... or in Brit Waters (as She was not Solas 2005 compliant) but Old Rock Dodger, Capt, Philip Rentell, did a first class job is playing classic old seas shanties, as well as LOH&G as we waived goodbye to much classier vessels such as Seven Seas Voyager and Noordammer as we (MS SEAWING of MYT Suncruises) weighed anchor ----- And BEAT the big Colossus!..

Maybe 'we' were too young at heart, sentimental, sanctimonious, or even PATRIOTIC .. and enjoyed the sound events for what they were? Checkout web page
and read the review of Oct 2004 under Airtours Seawing.

LESSON: Most noise is not generated from an empty Vessel ... but from a very HAPPY ONE! Thank you Capt. P Rentell (now on Saga Rose)

A little research revealed that the melody for this song is the same as that for the Elvis Presley song Wooden Heart. The Elvis song also contains some of the German lyrics. And you can hear a clip here.

Maybe the toilet failed because someone tried to flush the crap music .....................

If the propulsion system works on recycled methane, then the music is the cause of all the problems.

By the way, YMCA was a hit in the late 1970's: I wonder how old the "young man" referred to in the song now is....... maybe a more appropriate song would be St Winifred's School Choir with that wonderful hit "Grandad we love you"

The song "Wooden Heart" was featured in Elvis' first post-army movie "G.I. Blues" (1960) with Elvis singing it at a kids' puppet show. The melody is much older and, according to a PBS program about the accordion, was popular with accordion bands in the southern US in the early years of the 20th Century.

Joe Dowell recorded "Wooden Heart" about a year later and hit number 1 in the Billboard charts with it. (Elvis' version had previously hit number 1 in the UK charts). Joe admitted to staying up all night before his recording session listening to Elvis' version so he could get the pronunciation of the German lyrics right.

On Lloyd Triestino's Europa in 1959, they seemed to pipe Paul Anka records out to the open decks all day long. Since this was still early in Paul's career there weren't too many songs to choose from, so they got repeated over and over. Still this was not as bad as the house "band" playing "Volare" ad nauseum every night (except on movie nights) in the First Class Lounge .

Are Thomson going for the 'Booze Cruisers'? Latest offer from Tesco is, buy a Husky 'personal drinks' [ie beer] refridgerator, and get £100 worth of Thomson Holiday vouchers! See here. Perhaps you are supposed to lug it alonf o the holiday with you. [I don't expect the vouchers are worth anything anyway as one has to book through a specific agency].
