Didn't see it. Did they mention that the Stockholm is still sailing? (At least her hull, except for the bow, is still sailing. )

It only aired on Discovery Channel Canada, which is a shame, since I would have loved to seen it. Unless, of course, it was a repeat of the Discovery Channel documentary on Andrea Doria that aired in the late 90's- which did indeed mention Stockholm's ironic twist of fate- serving as Italia Prima, at least at the time. The History Channel also had some programmes on her as well. The best programme only gave her a passing mention, however- 'Floating Palaces' was one of the best I've ever seen on ocean liners...

No Brian, I don think mention was made of the Stockholm still sailing.

Unfortunately my viewing was interrupted by no fewer than three phone calls from the west coast –3 hours behind me time wise!

I don’t believe it was a previously aired programme. The focus was on underwater exploration of what now remains and just what caused the disaster.

When it became evident that the AD and the Stockholm were on a collision course, seems it was agreed that the ships would pass each other port to port side – one ship changed course - it has not been determined which one. In those days, seems there was no means of instant communication between the two Bridges.

Ben, have to agree it was almost agonizing to watch the AD sink from sight.

Commodore, that’s one of the negative aspects of Discovery Channel. I don’t believe it was a repeat of the late 90’s documentary. I have a tape of Floating Palaces- the programmes in no way can be compared - few interior shots of either ship were shown last night.

I think I saw this documentary too some months ago.
Watching Andrea Doria sinking was quite something as the film was very clear.
However, I came accross a color view with Doria on her side at Corbis, very interesting for modellers...
I understand an expedition has been searching for Stockholm's bow, which is missing from the side of Doria on the bottom!

The Stockholms bow was still attached after the ships had parted. There are pictures showing the Stockholm the following day with her bow staved in.Latter on as she set sail sail for New York , the damaged forepeak area dropped off into the sea.

Could her crew have cut off the piece that was hanging enroute to New York? Froms pics I have seen, it looked like a section of the forcastle decking/plating was forced upward then fell back downward after the collision. From other pics I have seen, Stockholm's bow was pushed in like an accordion and not torn off. Of course, a portion could still be wedged in Andrea Doria's starboard side and buried under the ocean floor.

I think it's doubtful that part of STOCKHOLM's bow remained in the DORIA. Various survivors describe seeing the sides of cabins opened up to the outside in the collision area. The girl Linda Morgan was literally scooped up along with her bed and retracted back along with the STOCKHOLM in the wreckage of the bow.

In fact, the STOCKHOLM remained anchored to the sea bottom after the collision, unable to raise her anchors. Eventually the forward bow section fell away, carrying the anchor chains, enabling the Swedish vessel to move under her own power.
