That's odd she should be in Stravanger, Norway today (Monday).

I wonder why the change? Is she still having technical problems, maybe?

Well my Cunard Brochure says so, but that was probably printed at the end of 2004?

CruiseCal has her down for Hamburg today, and that's not a site that's particularly quick to be updated - I think it's all done manually by the website owner.

This seems to be quite an event: German TV is covering her stay live (hourly update on some stations) - on n-tv (a cnn equivalent) they said that halve a million people (!) came to see her. What a potential for cruising. Sadly (or luckily ? ) most of them believe that it is completely unaffordable to travel with such a ship. (...and the media are doing a lot to keep this clichee alive... )

P.S.: So much again to the irrelevance of the exterior appearance.

She's not cheap either! Certainly the most expensive mega-ship.

Yes, but I "heard" quite often that she is the most expensive ship in the world (true, if you want to buy her ) and that a crossing costs 50.000 Euros per person (true in Grill class quaters).
Again congratulations to the Cunard marketing department. It`s really an achievment to position a new ship this way.

I take your point Ernst, but £799 (minimum) for a Trans, that's £1598 for a couple (plus tips and onboard extra's) for just six nights is unaffordable for many people.

I agree, she is not the cheapest ship, and not affordalbe for everyone and even very cheap cruises are not within reach for many. But I do not like this cliche of crusing (not necessarily with the QM2) being so much more expensive than other vacations. Especially with the QM2 - and she got a lot of media attention - they often played the card of the unaffordable luxury liner. And altough she is not cheap, she is not as expensive as often cited. I really heard these astronomic numbers and that the QM2 is the most expensive ship several times - finally one can misread some of Cunards (german) publicity material this way.

I take your point. Saying that the QM2 has suites that cost £25,000 per person, per week (or whatever they cost), makes good headlines.

Just arrived back home from the QM2 Day in Hamburg. And, wow, it was giantic. more than 500.000 people was there, the traffic in Hamburg collapsed.

In the early morning on monday we sailed with a little ship and 400! other ships along the elbe to the QM2. After we turned, we sailed togehter with the QM2 back into the port, where thousands of people watched the Ship on Grasbrook terminal.

Later in the day, she had turned herself for the evening, in the just 355 m wide elbe, with her own power.

But the most impressive moment was the leaving of the QM2 in the night. the whole 500.000 people watched the 11km long firework and the sailaway of the QM2.

This day with the 24 hours without sleep was it really worth.

A lot of pictures will follow (if you wanna see them) I first had to sleep some hours.

Thanks for your pictures.
It surely was quite the event, even a second time QM2 is a crowd attraction (I remember that last yyear before QM2 was in Rotterdam, she came from hamburg and that there were there too many many people)
I like her looks more and more, perhaps because I get used.
She is huge.

The same hapened during QM2 first cruise when she arrived in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Hundred of thousands people where there all over the time she was moored. Considering that Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has 300.000 inhabitants and the Gran Canaria 500.000 it was considered that half of the population went to welcome and farewell QM2. Proportionally I do not think it could be greater in any place.

That welcome and farewell suprised Comodores Warwick and Cunared and Carnival executives in the ship- Theyt considered that was biggest welcome and farewell given to any ship in the history so far, at least, for a Cunarder, as commented to passengers and I read in some reviews.

In the opposiste side in the first visit of QM2 to Barcelona I did not read tha there were a lot of people in the port.

The welcome of the QM2 in the last year, as she arrived in Hamburg for the first time, was the reason why she came back in this year. Originally she should be in Rotterdam at this time, bur Captian Wright was so impressed of the welcome that he wrote a letter to Cunard and pleased them to sent the QM2 back to Hamburg this year. And the welcome 2005 was bigger than in the last year.

But since when has the QM2 a third captian? does someone know? His name is Warner. And he was also very impressed of the welcome this year.

Unfortunately for Captain Paul Wright he has been transferred to the Princess fleet. Cunard now come under P & O/Princess for operations. Warner, who previously has been master of Grand & Golden and probably other units in Princess fleet would appear to be the new relief Captain on QM2.

I believe that you refered Between Strandkai and Amerikakai or Kamerunkai.

Do you have any chance to post the photo shown Amerikakai(opposite side of Hamburg Cruise Center) ?

Thank you, Phil. I hope Cunard don't get much more of Princess, especially not the design of the ships.

OceanLiners, sorry, but I haven't any pictures of the Amerika Kai, because the Queen was so big, we couldn't see what's behind her, and as she turned, we only had eyes for her. But what's so interesting at the Amerika Kai?
