On a recent walkaround on Pacific Sky, i was surprised to see they had replaced ALL the wooden doors to external decks with Stainless Steel ones like this:

They are sort of modern / futuristic looking, more like something from a "spaceship" but at the same time very cold and sterile and i'm not sure if i like them... The wooden ones were so traditional.

But i am wondering if anyone has seen these on another ship, i have never seen steel doors like this, but do they feature on current new builds?

I wonder why they changed all the doors on the sky, are they cheaper? Easier to maintain? Stronger? Water tight?

Just wondering if anyone can shed any light on the subject and what everybody thinks of them? the "double door" versions look even more peculiar!

Maybe they meet with new fire regs?

I once saw an iternal wooden door being replaced with a metal one, on the Black watch, for this very reason. Apparently a safety officer inspection demanded it.

From the Topic Heading, I thought this might be a discussion about thieves who wear gloves!

Indeed, I am sure fire regs had something to do with it. Reminds me a bit of the SS United States and the reasoning behind her wood-less construction, save the butchers block and piano.

I have seen a mix of wooden door and stainless steel on my trip on the Mariner Ot Seas. Most of the door that the passengers walked through were wood and the stainless steel ones were crew entrances.

There are modern ships (QM2 and the HAL Vistas if I remember correctly) that still have wooden outer doors. If even wooden doors are a fire hazard then they should also abandon the wooden benches and wooden deck chairs, wooden parasols etc. I think it has more to do whit saving money. Perhaps a large amount of steel doors is cheaper to buy and to maintain then wooden doors. Or perhaps the ship yard could get a good deal on steel doors that they could not have with wooden doors.

There is still a lot of wood on modern ships so the question of stainless steel doors replacing wooden ones because of a fire hazard doesn't really stick. I think what Onno said about price and maintenance could be the reason, also aren't steel doors stronger? Are they also lighter than timber doors?

Ugly in every way. Oké they are easy to maintain, lighter. But looking so low budget.

Wooden doors are much more elegant and yes heavy in usse they are very good looking and give every ship some quality even the uglyest.

And fire dangerous with today safety techic's this would not have been an problem.

Greetings Ben.

I agree Ben. A well maintained wooden door has character.

If the door leads in to a stairway that also works
as an emergency exit it is req. to be a fire screen door.
The one on the pickture is NOT. Fire doors does not
have windows..

Looking at it I am not so sure whether this is a window or a sheet of metal with some black paint.

Ah, that's what they changed the door on the Black Watch to steel.

Wooden doors create a much more classy enviroment, they also look very nice when maintanied the right way, steel doors are just plain ugly unless there in an onboard nightclub.
