I was driving across the Harbour Bridge today, and noticed Pacific Sky was in town (which was pretty odd enough). But as I got closer, I noticed that the funnel hasnt got the 'Pacific Sky' on it anymore...its just the sun and some bits of blue (like at the front). And its not just painted on, its actually something added on (which causes a little shadow to show in the sunlight). IMO it doesnt look as good as before, but was this something as a result of the refit that we didnt know about?

But with a fresh coat of paint shes never looked better (might I add).

BTW i would have taken a picture with my camera phone but they tend to discourage driving without a handsfree, let alone taking pictures! And you know how the quality of a Nokia cameraphone is...might as well not have it!

interesting pick up - i too would like to knw the reasoning behind this!

i actually thought the writing on the funnel looked good (compared to the size/look of pac sun's)

can anyone shed some light on this?

also when is the ship due to depart syd for auckland?

Well i managed to capture some webcam images of the ship as it left sydney harbour just a few moments ago.

I wonder if this change has anything to do with the ship entering asians waters later in the year? I thought maybe a picture is better then text? however this may lead to some confusion between the pacific sky and sun? any thoughts?

I just needed to say that I think the new funnel design is truly horrible. It even looks like a new shade of blue has been painted as a background. The pacific sky's funnel design has always seemed more attractive to me than the pacific sun's, but this is definitely not the case anymore.

Honestly, it looks... almost like an afterthought, or what an artist might conjure up if they were dreaming of walking on barbed wire.

I was in Sydney today and took some photo's of the ship with the new design...yes imho it looks worse than the previous design.

And if they do this to Pacific Sky, I can only assume they will do it to Sun and Star as well...maybe trying to create some kind of branding image with this thing.

If you notice also, the waterline colour is also in the same (or similar) blue as the strip in the middle...it used to be a lighter greenish colour. Makes the ship look better i reckon. And I think this is the first time I havent seen her with a rusty colour near the anchor position...probably wont stay like that for long!

pungpui - i agree... older ships always look a lot better/fresher after a paint job.

Im not sure bout the funnel yet - i think you might be right with the branding of p&o aus ships. Maybe this is to suit the new pacific star? however we dont know what sort of funnel to expect with that one.

tazza - i also agree with you on that shade of blue... although i cant be sure until seeing it in person (rather then webcam images etc)

I agree, it could be confusing since the sun over the sea logo could be mistaken for PACIFIC SUN.

pungpui - i just took a closer look at the pictures you took. It looks like a better shade of blue in the close up.

Also you mentioned earlier about the sun logo not being painted on. you can definately see the shadows in the picture you posted.

i wonder if this is an illuminated thing? or will lights just shine on it from below?

This is the most logical thing now that P&O Australia will have three ships in its stable. Who knows, maybe they are thinking about adding more ships later on with names longer than Sky, Sun and Star.

thanks for the pictures. Phil and pungpui. I prefer the old livery. Looks more "playful". I think the sun and the white scribble should be bigger. Its too small on the funnel!

I doubt that P&O Aus would actually pay money for the inisignia to be illuminated, but I admit that would make for a more 'stunning' (if its possible) look at night.

The new shade of blue, doest really look good on the web cam pic, but it does seem to look better in the pics that pungpui took. Well, I just hope that they don't change the look of the other ships, the writing was large and happy, seemed to really scream the whole "funship" dialogue across.

Perhaps Pacific Cloud, Moon, Storm or Comet are all a little too blah for P&O

I think the aqua green color of her boot topping is from her Princess days. The color is very unique to Princess and there could have been left over paint to keep it fresh. The rust stains at the anchor pocket happen when paint crews are not keeping up. A new ship will develop rust stains as well very quickly.

I was lucky enough to enjoy a walk-around onboard Pacific Sky in Sydney yesturday 02 July 05 and have to say she is looking the best i have ever seen her!!

Totally repainted, the white is so bright it is blinding in the sun, and yes the hot topic of conversation was the Funnel, at first i hated it, because from a distance it looked wierd, but once up close, and then onboard it actually looks ok. It is MUCH better when up close, but i still don't know if i prefer it to her name. It covered more of the funnel and was better proportioned!

I think they will add this new logo to all the ship funnels so as the fleet will all be the same regardless of name.

But besides the funnel the other work they have done is great, she is looking so much fresher everywhere, inside and out! I took many photos (see link at the bottom) some are a bit blury sorry - as we were moving through quickly! But basically they have done the following:

Many new carpets, new soft furnishings and bathroom floors in all cabins, all new Public bathrooms including sensor taps! Pools and spa retiled, B grade suites now have convertable beds, new upholstery in most lounges, almost every surface repainted, Legends bar altered (wall knocked out to make bigger dance floor), All new handrails around outter decks, new astro turf on upper decks and other stuff i can't remeber lol.

I was really very impressed, see most of the changes in my photos, i think P&O did a great job, as they should have with her out of service all that time, but she really does look as good as new in many places.

SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE SUN!!! This visit has really confirmed what i thought, which is she is a much nicer ship, even after all the work they did to Sun, Sky takes the cake, so much classier, Public rooms much more comfortable, just a totally different feel onboard.

I think pax will be very pleased with the Sky, and she will remain very popular with Australians!

SydneyBoy, thanks for sharing your photos. I now have a good idea of what Pac Sky looks like.

I certainly plan to sail her when she begins her new season in 2006 cruising from Singapore.

Thanks again.

Regards,
Mike

P.S. They sure like the color blue, don't they!

Thanks for the pictures Sydneyboy. The PAC SKY looks nice with the refurbishment!

After these pictures, I think I will put her on my list of ships worth thinking of trying for 2006.

Thanks so much I think she looks terrific. I have always liked her as a ship and felt she has been overshadowed throughout her career, from her launch so soon after Royal Princess which was seen as so much more revolutionary....

I like her lines from the outside and now, with the exception of a few too many mirrored ceilings, she does indeed look lovely. I particularly like the subdued carpetting and the high ceilings.

i was looking @ the pre-refit images of sky. and noticed the extent of the rust around the ancore. i understand evey ship has rust around that area, but the extent of the sky is a embaressment. u can't c any white paint in some images just solid rust. hope p&o lift maintenance after this refit, were these images taken before her rust problem in aukland a couple of years ago. no wonder the ship almost sunk!!!!!!!!!

Hi Guys,

glad you liked the photos, i have since added another album, only this time of photo's i took before the refit in November last year (see link at bottom) there is a good shot of the old funnel to compare the changes:

Deck 9 001 and Waynaro, i think she is well worth a try, she is honestly in the best condition i have seen her, i think she is much fresher now inside and out than when i was onboard for her first cruise in 2000 as Pacific Sky.

Mec1, you are so right! I have just realised i think the MAJOR thing that gives Pacific Sky a really nice feel inside is her high ceilings, especially on the Promenade deck! They are so high and it feels so light, even in the corridoors you never feel claustrophobic. After having experienced the Pacific Sun in February, there is NO comparison. I think the Sky's high ceilings and nuetral tones make her SO much more comfortable than the "glitzy" brassy Sun ex Jubilee!

P&Ocruiser, all ships get rust around the anchor, i admit Sky did have an excessive amount, but we had 4 island stops in a row where the anchor was used daily and i guess they didnt have time to paint it until we got to the next "Dock" it was painted over when we got to Noumea. PS: she never "almost sunk"!

One last thing, when i was onboard last november the Captain actually held a bridge tour! He was a great captain, very friendly, even aloud us to tour whilst underway, was fantastic to see the Bride in operation. Anyway i got quite a few photo's which are included in this link, but they had this great board of pictures of the Sky in drydock during conversion from Princess - P&O AUS, shows her stabilizers/props/rudder and has an interesting explanation of each, there are other photo's where you can read it:

check it out!
