INFO Please! I am freaking out on a sailing I have booked for myself and spouse. Aegean 1, 4 nights in the middle of our Greek itinerary.
I AM a Travel Agent, I shouldn't be freakin' out. I have tried contacting Golden Star directly, it upset the sales dept I went around the tour operator, they cc'ed the tour operator, now the tour operator spanked my hand for going direct for info... I see it under Golden Sun, who the heck even owns it? The reviews I have been able to find sound like an absolute nightmare! I have sailed them all from Cunard down to NCL. I DO expect this to be lower than Carnival, but it sounds like a ferry w/cabins and an empty pool and rotten food.

AEGEAN I is NOT the best ship to sail in Greek. If you can, do switch to Louis Cruise Line!

Dana, if you can change this ship, DO! It has the reputation of the lowest of the low. I am sure Patrick will come in here.

Be very very careful with this line. These guys there are pirates and count to the worst of the Greek cruise-business as also Anaconda Maritime (actually, the same people stand behind and change ownerships and management all the time behind the scenes to not be made responsible for anything).
Things can happen like the vessel will sail out of port much earlier because they decided to do so...
The best example of their desastrous management is AEGEAN SPIRIT / OCEAN GLORY I and also some escapades of fromer ARCADIA (now CARIBIC STAR)...
AEGEAN I itself is not a bad vessel. You can easily compare her to ships like ROYAL IRIS for example but the software behind is the reason not to book with this line. She was infact a ferry which has been nicely reconstructed but the line just makes nothing out of her.
Even in Piraeus, not many people either know or want to know this line. Be careful also about the safety onboard !
They can in NO WAY be compared to lines such as NCL or Carnival. If you are used to cruise with such lines, you will be more than disappointed of
Golden Star Cruises.
It can be that things are going better by now but I have huge doubts. Better try to avoid this line and switch to Louis Cruises for example.

Thank you for the input. I doubt the tour company will let me change my booking, the reason I am on Aegean is Louis Hellenic is "full", and if that's true it's for an obvious good reason. Regardless, I will strongly request being "repositioned". We may just have to make the best of it, consider it a ferry with a bed and a means of transportation. Thank God it's only 4 nights out of the 10 night trip. You think I would know better, especially being an agent, to check it out and not rely on suppliers word. I will post a mssg post cruise.....hope for the best.

Dana:
I've actually sailed on this ship, albeit 9-10 years ago when she was Dolphin Hellas's Aegean Dolphin, before being renamed Aegean 1 when chartered by Renaissance Cruises. Like you I was on a 4 day cruise as part of a package tour. My recollection was she was a nice little ship with basic accomodation, good food, entertainment and excellent tours, even earning good reviews from the pro. reviewers on this very website.
Unfortunately things seem to have gone downhill since then, but hopefully she may have retained some of her good features to make your cruise bearable. Good luck

Dana,

Having worked for many yrs for a Greek tour operator handling big numbers of passenegrs every monday on the 4-d cruise on either ex-ROC vessels and AEGEAN I as well, I must admit that AEGEAN I is not a bad choice. I have an accurate information as my ex-company brings 400 passenegrs on weekly basis for the 4-d cruise.
Last week passenegrs on Louis Perla found cocroches on the restaurant's table, took pictures and now they are asking for refunds.
Cabins of AEGEAN I are better than PERLA, Kalypso is the best of 3.
Regarding services onboard LOUIS is leading but not with so big difference.
Even if you book with LOUIS you might find yourself sailing on the AEGEAN I as they are overbooked and they switch passenegrs to AEGEAN I.
Last week some of our customers sailed on PERLA till Mykonos and there they were obliged to switch ship...

My Opinion: try the AEGEAN I, do not be scared.

I'm informed on a weekly basis of what is going on LOUIS ships and AEGEAN I as well.

According to very well informed sources LOUIS bought the 75% of GOLDEN STAR CRUISES shares.
An official announcement will follow soon. A very few people know about this deal so far.
