Lucky you Andrew, you work in the docks so can get pictures like that. I wish I could. My best shots of Adonia entering the dock were taken from Mayflower Park and then I went to the Vida Five-A-Side footie pitch at Millbrook where tall trees obscure the view.

Excellent, many thanks. Indeed lucky being able to get such photos. Is there enough room for the tug to get back out down the side of Adonia?

They put the ship to one side, the little tug leaves, then they centre the ship so that when they drain the water, she will sit on the blocks.

Faith, yes I'm lucky enough to work in the port, but those photos weren't from inside the dry dock, just looking through the fence from the side of the internal road.

Off topic Faith, but I know you'll be interested, latest 8500teu offering from P&O Nedlloyd, the "P&O Nedlloyd Manet" arrived on her maiden voyager earlier this week, next week will be an even bigger ship, in fact the biggest container ship in the world, the Hapag Lloyd 8756teu "Colombo Express".

They are getting bigger and bigger, and proving to be more of a challenge for those of us involved the planning and operation!

Rgds,
Andrew

Regarding the Manet, I went round to Eling and got some photos of her at the CP. Pity she came in and left at Stupid O' Clock (0730 and 2359).

I did see the sister ship, P&O NL Mondriaan, last month, that was in and out at more reasonable times. What time is Colombo Express coming in next weeK, Andrew?

Any jobs going where you work?

I have read some where that ADONIA was not
successful with the British cruise market. Can
anyone give specifics as to why? Is her sister,
OCEANIA, more successful with the Brits? If so,
why? Thanks for your help.

Whilst they are quite pretty, they don't have enough public room or deck space.

CGT,

Very little was actually changed on these ships other than the name and signage in public areas and staterooms, and of course, painting of the funnel. (Culd be one of the reasons she didn't go over well in the UK market)

It's not going to take much more than paint to return her to a "Princess".

Tim

Tim, I read in Princess' European/Med brochure and the SEA PRINCESS will have Movies Under The Stars. Is it true?

NAL, a "theory" I heard about OCEANA's success is that she is catering to the younger crowd rather than "Adult Only". I think that she became victim because P&O were to receive two Adult ONly ships and ADONIA is not needed to be the Adult Only ship and P&O does not need another OCEANA?

Is that the seawitch already back up on her stack? What did they do with the Seawitch taken from her and her sisters stacks a couple of years ago... Ship them to Fincantieri and Mitsubishi for the new ships?

The funnel will look much better in Princess Livery. The yellow-buff of P&O (though I love it on Oriana, Aurora etc.) looked so odd on that huge structure. We traveled on her as Sea Princess and I though she had fairly good deck space. I have no idea why she was not a success at P&O.

Something to add is that her interiors are too "mass market" supposely and typical P&O cruisers are not used to the shiny materials used and decorations through the ship. Whereas OCEANA succeed attracting younger crowd, ADONIA did not attract the older crowd because the way these white sisters were designed.

It was a big mistake taking two ships with decor aimed at the 'American' market and expecting us Brits to embace them both.

The majority of P&O's passengers are mature and would not warm to Las Vegas glitz onboard a P&O vessel. That's why Arcadia has tasteful (understated) interiors.

Is it so sure she was not a sucess with P&O? (sucess = ship is making money)
Maybe the reason is "simpler": She can easily be moved back to Princess, as they for sure can "fill" another ship, wheras the other ships "avaiable" (Arcadia, Royal Princess) do not fit that well (anymore) to Princess, whereas they are very suitable for P&O.

Funnel's now painted white and seawitch is in place. Apparently they had a bit of trouble placing the logo as the wind (it was quite windy here today) kept blowing it around.

Malcolm: I also prefer the understated interiors to the glitz. As Sea Princess she had a few public rooms that were somewhat traditional such as the nautically themed dark-paneled cocktail bar and simple card room. It is all a matter of taste. I have a friend that traveled on Oriana last year and thought that ship's interiors to be boring and uninspired-My friend is is a fine antiques dealer and she thought they needed more color. It is all personal preference. Are there photos of Arcadia's public rooms on line??

I suspect that Princess will reclaim the Oceana (ex Ocean Princess) soon. Probably if/when P&O get its new Grand class vessel (Canberra ?).

P&O will probably have a hard time filling more than 5 vessels in strictly the British market, especially with the competition already in place and the possibility that North American cruise companies would make a greater push in the European market.

With Arcadia, Aurora, Oriana, Artemis and possibly Canberra, this should provide a good range of classic type vessels for the P&O clentale and Oceans will have a hard time filling in. Princess could probably use an extra vessel in the 1,900 passenger category beside already have three sister ships of the same type.
