"Only prison ship in UK to close

The UK's only prison ship is to close, the Home Office has announced. HMP Weare, docked in Portland Harbour in Dorset, will be shut by the end of the year as the Prison Service says necessary renovations are too costly.

The government purchased it in 1997 as a temporary overcrowding measure and intended to close it in 2000. Weare, originally a troop ship in the Falklands war and then a floating jail in the US, had been heavily criticised in prison service reports.

The vessel's seaworthiness certificate is due for renewal next year and "substantial investment" would be necessary to keep the ship operational, a Prison Service spokeswoman said.

Last year Anne Owers, the chief inspector of Prisons, criticised conditions on the Weare and said it should be closed down unless a huge amount of money was spent on refurbishment.

Mark Leech, editor of the Prisons Handbook, welcomed the decision to close the ship and said: "The Weare is a relic of a bygone age. It should be emptied, towed out to sea and sunk."

From the BBC.

Put a few balconies along some of those windows, and it would look like any number of modern cruise ships. It's a wonder someone doesn't buy it for conversion!

What a pity that she has to go. Today they don`t build ships like this anymore. But we should not give up yet: After serving many years as static ship there might be a second career for her sailing as cruise ship.

Perhaps Onno could do a Princess version and attach some jet engines. She should then make some headway with a couple of pods of whales harnessed below.

I have even a better idea After my recent experience with my cruise cancellation by Princess due to overbooking I suggest they tow this thing behind the Diamond Princess ....to solve the over-booking issue they seem to have!!!

This is an interesting compromise. But I think we all would like to see her preserved in her original condition.

Industry sources tell me that the Association of Convicted Criminals (ACC) is making a last ditch effort to purchase the Weare and convert her into a hotel and conference center. The plan calls for her to be towed to Devil's Island off the coast of French Guiana. Buffet dining and intimate accomodations - all in a safe and secure environment - are the going to be the hallmarks of the new venture.

According to ACC spokesperson, J.T. Ripper "In these times of global uncertainty we believe there are large numbers of business and leisure travelers who would pay extra to relax in the secure confines of a vessel such as the Weare".

Ripper also said he expected that the structured daily activity schedule would be popular with folks who have difficulty trying to fit everything into their busy schedules at home. Decorative shivs will be awarded to those who complete the demanding fitness program.

If that plan doesn't work out she will be sent to Singapore to operate as a gambling vessel.

Pam, an inside source just mailed me this artist impression and told me that Carnival secretly has bought all flouting prison barges around the world and they will be installed on all ships sailing for the Carnival family. This will increase their passenger capacity with another 500 passengers per barge!

Hey this looks awfully familiar. I think this was posted some time ago, and Onno actually put the Carnival Funnel on it, and Princess funnels..maybe some others I'm forgetting. Man it was the funniest thing I think I've seen in a hell of a long time!

Onno.. do you recall? Maybe dig 'em up and post'em again?

hi Seas I linked to the old thread above, but no Princess version..

LOL.. Joe & Onno. Perhaps the additional secure accommodation and Devil's Island itinerary would be of benefit to Carnival on those 3 night Spring Break trips. No doubt they will soon be putting the new vessels to the test, but they might also need to achieve some extra knots, so those caught drinking too much can start rowing.

And where will these barges be installed? Carnival should have indicated this in their artist impression.

I know Ernst, Carnival design team did a good job blending in the barges with the rest of the ship, you can hardly see the addition!

I keep imagining big red eyes on stems above the bridge I bet if you posted it under a 'New Design' thread on some other boards, people are so daft they'd even believe "Prison Princess" is for real. Not long for 1st April
