How would you design specific parts of a cruise ship...
How would you design a main/alternative dinning room if you could have your own dream cruise ship built? Any ships you would use for inspiration? Describe as many aspects of how you would design a dinning room if you had the chance.

I would have one with great sea views, two or three stories high with an atrium, maybe a mix between the Mercury's Mathattan resturaunt and the Voyager class dinning rooms, just without the contemprerary design on them. I also like the one on Radisson Diamond or the Norwegian Wind with views from the high stern area.

I would like to see a promenade deck as a dining room: one table deep so all get an ocean view.

Who looks at the others at different tables?

I would like sea views, two deck high space, with three or four tiered levels accessed via ramps. Comtinental menu, soft lighting and intimate seating for 2,4 or up to 8 pax at a table. Wait service by most experienced personnel. Open only for lunch, dinner and late night dining. Also a few tables permitting seating of single crusiers. Up scale wine list. Let's have class, a view and muted noise. Would reservations and more formal attire be too much to ask?

I would like a 3 levels amphitheatre style - perphaps like the aft of an old galley - dining room with big portholes offering great ocean views. Also, 2-3 different colored sections on each level! Passengers would have the option to choose daily their favorite color to be part of their dining experience.
Waiters to be dressed with each section's same color uniforms.

I would make sure that the ship only carried enough passengers to allow for unstructured dining - no set times or seats.
And I'd make sure the sign in front was spelled correctly:
D I N I N G - with ONE "N" in the middle.

Unless you happen to be dining in a room where the din is terrible, then the other diners must be 'dinning'?

I was just going to say, that's the trouble with too many of these rooms is that they really are "dinning rooms"! A little bit of peace and quiet could turn them into dining rooms.

I also tought about that. Generally, I would say NCL is heading the right direction (altough NCL is not my thing...): Several small dining rooms in different locations, different style, for different "functions" (Buffet, dinner, breakfast) etc...

Maybe one could also think about more multifunctional public rooms like observation lounges / night clubs where you can also eat, or instead of a midship "lido pool" someting like a winter-garden, with some tables, maybe with a sliding roof....

Of course this would change the cruise expience quite a bit, not having table mates etc. Also the desing of the ship could be changed quite a bit, as you could more easily "hide" the fact that you have two (or more?) seatings, allow passangers to eat / reserve a table when they want, like ashore.

Altough I also love to have a view to the sea (wherever I am on the ship) dining rooms (=evening = it is dark outside) helping to use otherwise "worthless" space)

sorry: (again to quick)

Altough I also love to have a view to the sea (wherever I am on the ship) DINING rooms without windows (=evening = it is dark outside) helping to use otherwise "worthless" space could be reconsidered. (who really wants to have breakfast in an upscale "Restaurant" ? I would prefere a cofee house or something like that)
