I was having a browse on the Holland America site for a cruise for a friend, when I happened to notice this in the key at the bottom of the list of cruises:-

Ship Legend

AMS ms Amsterdam FUT ms Futuredam MAS ms Maasdam
OST ms Oosterdam PRI ms Prinsendam RTT ms Rotterdam
RYN ms Ryndam STA ms Statendam VEN ms Veendam
VOL ms Volendam WES ms Westerdam ZAN ms Zaandam
ZUD ms Zuiderdam

Not very snappy, is it?

I think this refers to the new Vista-class NOORDAM. Am I correct?

I suspect that it does refer to the Noordam (2006). In that case the future designator would probably be NOR.

Tiz interesting, but what becomes of the name when it is here and in service. Ok, here we go..

[b] PRE MS Presentdam Now, I think when she grows older, perhaps---> [b/] PAS MS Pastdam

Ok , that's it.

It must be a placeholder for the Noordam.

But it's just too funny, the way it is at the moment.

Yeah you don't want to know what a "FUT" is in Hawaiian Pidgin English, either. Maybe it means the same thing that it does in German.

I believe HAL talks about the new m.s. Noordam 4. Wich entered service early 2006..

But this name is already public and HAL speaks about a new Noordam.

It's also possible that there is a new vessel planned by HAL last year there was talking about a new smaller class off cruiseships fore HAL. Maybe an indencation off what comming after the Vista class vessels.

I believe that the first is correct it's the new Noordam.

Greatings Ben.

What about Nieuw-Amsterdam?
Noordam is already replaced.
May be they keep the name for a larger ship?

I much hope for a "Nieuw Amsterdam", it should be an exceptional ship however.

I read once that HAL chose "Amsterdam" as istead of "Nieuw Amsterdam", as it was difficult to pronounce

"Nieuw Amsterdam" would be a perfect name for a ship sailing from New York

Well, you're all way off base. I phoned HAL Reservations and this is what it means

QUOTE] It's not the Noordam ... it is for future cruise requests that are not yet bookable in the system. [/QUOTE]

Sorry to dash your hopes that it won't be the Nieuw Amsterdam or some other old HAL name.

Thanks Sympatico FYI!
I still hope that a sister ship to mvRotterdam will be named mvNA, as her near sister is much slower and not remarkable in a way.
BTW, mvNoordam1983 should soon arrive at Falmouth dockyard for refit and transformation into mvThompson Celebration!
A link here for the bbcwebcam at FalmouthFalmouth webcam.
Apologies if link not working!
And I am attending an evening at the Queens hotel in Portsmouth about the new Celebration!

The m.s. Rotterdam 6 sistership is the Amsterdam 3. They are sisters. I don't believe that there will be a Nieuw Amsterdam because that would confuse passengers between the Amsterdam and a Nieuw Amsterdam.

I think that the next vessel after the Noordam would be called Prinsendam. Personally i would like to see the name Potsdam returned in the fleet.

Buth whene HAL desided to name a futere newbuild Nieuw Amsterdam i believe they must chanse the name off the Amsterdam.

Greatings frome a city with a dam ending Rotterdam. Ben.
