I was there this morning and saw the new Carnival Valor arrive in Miami. I had just returned from a three-night cruise on the Majesty of the Seas, and from the deck I took a lot of pictures of the new ship. I'll post some photos as soon as I get them printed. As a couple of helicopters were buzzing around and the fireboats were spraying water into the air, I noticed a large yacht that seemed to be posing for pictures with the Carnival Valor...I wonder who was on that yacht?

Why do all the new Carnival ships have that ugly hump on the front, making it look like a floating 747 (on which the hump is not ugly)?

Thanks for the report Barrys! Could the yacht be Mickey's?

No she doesn't. That feature is found on the Spirit-class ships (963 ft-88,500 ton). The Valor's (952 ft-110,000 ton) specialty restaurant is Scarlett’s and is located in a similar spot but doesn't have the glass roof attached to the funnel.

More Scarlett’s info:

To celebrate a special occasion or simply to enjoy an evening of exquisite dining, there’s Scarlett’s, Carnival Valor’s reservations-only “steakhouse-style” supper club. This intimate restaurant will offer a truly exquisite dining experience with hand-cut dry-aged beef – a 24-ounce porterhouse, 14-ounce strip loin, and nine-ounce filet mignon – along with other gourmet cuisine such as veal chops, lobster tail, Alaskan King Crab, and Chilean sea bass. Scarlett’s will also feature one of the finest wine lists afloat – hand-picked by Carnival’s chefs to match the cuisine.

Scarlett’s interiors are inspired by the heroine in the classic Civil War film and novel “Gone with the Wind,” employing decorative touches of the era -- wood paneling, white columns, pink shutters in the windows, and arches throughout the room. Nightly entertainment in the form of a talented jazz duo completes the mood of understated elegance. Scarlett’s will carry a $25 per person reservations fee

Woah. Thanks for pointing it out Joe. I never realized that the CONQUEST-class, and even the DESTINY-class, ships are shorter than the SPIRIT-class ships.... I am sure Carnival can keep lengthening the DESTINY and CONQUEST class ships

So Spirit class ships are substantially shorter than Valor, yet Valor is a little SHORTER than Spirit?? How on earth does that work!?! must be a tremendously tall ship! No wonder whenever I look at the Destiny/Conquest class they always look serverely odd and stunted!

Just defies logic to me!

No, the Spirit-Class ships are a bit longer and "sleeker" than the Conquest-class ships, which are bulkier, wider, and taller, giving them more tonnage.

I also saw and photographed the Sovereign of the Seas in wet dock on the 10th. I'll post photos when I can. The rock climbing wall on Sovereign-class ships seems a bit awkward, and blocks the view of the wake from the Viking Crown lounge.

For the exact same reason that 747's have the hump...to increase passenger capacity. I've sailed on the Carnival Glory and I must say it was very nice to have a cabin on the Lido deck (same as the pool deck). Just leave the cabin and walk to the pool, no lifts or stairs. Also the Carnival cabins are quite spacious and they price balcony rooms at a rate comprable to what RCCL charges for outside cabins with no balcony. They may not be considered pretty, but they're functional and comfortable.

BTW-The Conquest class ships are considerably wider than the Spirit class ahips and won't fit through the Panama Canal.

This class of ship IMO is much more attractive the the Fantasy Class (or whatever that class is called) The placement of the boats as well as the overall lines of the ship are relatively pleasing. Of course a longer bow/forecastle would help, but that feature would help almost every newbuild.

Agreed with you lasuvidaboy. I think the "hump" stern/aft superstructure can be improved upon. Also, making it panamax-length might help streamline the ship. The CONQUEST-class ship looks better than the DESTINY-class with the extension IMO.

Thanks for the explanation about the ship, but you're wrong about the 747. The reason the 747 has the hump was because Boeing originally intended the 747 to turn in to a freighter once SuperSonic transport took over. The hump was so that the cockpit could be located above and a the nose could lift open for cargo loading. The hump also allowed for a small passenger lounge to be located behind the cockpit (a secondary consequence). Boeing originally never intended the 747 to last as long as it did, but SST travel never got anywhere and the 747 became the Queen of the Skies for long haul air travel.

They yacht is Micky Arison's MYLIN IV; a 200 foot Feadship he inheritied from his father. I'm guessing she's just returned from Europe and may have accompanied the Valor across from Europe. She docks at Broward Marine here in Ft Lauderdale and I see her quite often as it's just up the river from my home.
