Can anyone tell me about the smallest cruise ship staterooms? I recently went on RCCI Monarch of the Seas and had a 117 sq ft. interior stateroom. Has anyone had a smaller room than that? I heard the QE2 has an 82 sq. ft. interior stateroom. What ships currently have the smallest? The room was so small I put my foot into my wifes nylon hose by mistake while dressing.

Good question!

Without a doubt, the Sovereign Class ships are in the running for the smallest *standard* cabins sailing today. They are TINY. Not many other cruise ships have horizontal hallways across the width of the ship with seven inside cabins across.

I'm one of the people who does like to spend some time in my cabin during a cruise, so I find those boxes a little too confining.

I've sailed in very small upper/lower berth cabins on older ships like NORWAY and QE2, but for some reason they don't feel as confining as the pre-fab boxes on ships like Sovereign Class.

QE2 has some lower grade cabins that are quite large when compared to the pre-fabricated units installed on ships today. I stayed in one years ago on 5 deck and it was not bad and friends were in another cabin nearby that was almost 50% larger than mine! Both cabins were the same grade and we paid the same amount yet they were quite different in layout. I have forgotten what grade it was. The old Pacific/Island Princess had some tiny cabins unless you opted for a 'suite' which was also small. Sitmar's Fairwind/Fairsea had really nice sized standard cabins with plenty of closets. Even though they were not pre-fab units, they were all newly built when the ships were rebuilt as cruise ships.

During my first crossing on QE2 over 20 years ago, I had one of the small inside cabins on deck 5--I managed all right but I was there as a single. It would be very tight quarters for 2 people!

The NORWAY had/has some inside upper & lower berth cabins measuring 70 square feet.

The smallest cabins I have ever seen were on the Rotterdam V. They were of inside cabins. During the WC they were often used for storing the large trunks people would have shipped or by the maid or manservant who accompanied the rich folk.

I remember they had bunk beds and a tiny bathroom. There must have been a shower in there, but I don't remember seeing it. Maybe one dresser and a chair.

The smallest cabin I ever had was on Festivals Flamenco. In fact the bathroomdoor was blocked when a drawer was openend. And this was a triple cabin (2032)

Yes, those are small cabins! I've sailed on both SUN PRINCESS and SOUTHWARD and I agree they don't get much smaller .... and all that Formica! At least when those ships were built small cabins were the norm. It's just not acceptable anymore.

NORWEGIAN MAJESTY also has very small cabins, as does NORWEGIAN SEA.

I think the smallest passenger cabin I ever experienced was on the Veracruz. A close second was a Main Deck inside on Premier's Royale (Seabreeze). The sink had to be folded up to use the commode. The locker blocked part of the bunk making a tunnel for your feet (or head, if you are a ghoul). It fed many jokes for onboard comedians... "Had to leave the cabin to change my mind".... "I put my key in the door and broke the mirror".... "To shower I just soaped up and spun around in the corner" etc, etc.

My inside Main Deck cabin on Rotterdam V was tiny, but had plenty of storage and even a towel warmer in the bathroom.

NCL's original "White Fleet": Starward, Skyward, and, maybe, Southward. They sold a 70 sq. foot cabin to 3 passengers and promoted it as "an oversized lower", suitable for two, with an upper. I remember you didn't need to use the ladder for the pullman as you could just step down on the chest of drawers and hop down. Only a tiny partitioned space with a curtain for a wardrobe. Funny though, it seemed quite fine at the time - 1973!

As for today's fleets: Norwegian Sea; Sovereign class; SS Norway (although she has some wonderfully unique designs - many bathrooms are bigger than the actual cabin space); Norwegian Majesty; SS Monterey (the original Matson upper/lower insides AND the original Boat Desk singles - now doubles); and Norwegian Dream & Wind.
