Today on the news in Sydney they reported on the P&O Pacific Sky and its return to Brisbane. Apparentley passengers onboard were very upset about the circumstances and they will have their entire fair refunded and probley another 25% off a future cruise. I think the Pacific Sky is worth more trouble than what she is worth, although I have sailed on her and found it quite pleasant but for the company she is probley provides a lot of loss in profit. And also with the delay of Pacific Sun … YEEKS!

Cheers

Leighton: Channel 9 in Perth showed happy PAX leaving saying they were very happy with their refund and the 25% saving on other P&O cruises - I guess it all depends on what point of view you listen to hey!

You have been on P Sky - tell us your thoughts?

i saw a channel ten report in the late news last night, and then another one at 5pm today. The one last night was quite lengthy and more of a promotional video for P&O despite it actually reporting on its breakdown. It did however raise the past of pacific sky - ie its first cruise had lot of unhappy customers, also the death of someone from menningicocal and also the hull damage last year.

Tonight again another lengthy report and it focused on passengers returning from their cut short cruise. they were all glad about the refund and future credit. The passengers interviewed all had a positive attitude despite this 'dream vaction' being altered. One guy said yes it was to be the cruise of their dreams but these things happen. the mechanics is just something that happend and despite this we had a good time and are glad we can book another holiday.

Another lady was also very positive saying she just had a 5 day cruise to nowhere for free! she too was going to book another holiday.

So despite this report being embarrasing for P&O - they still got quite positive advertising out of it. (it could have been a lot worse - ie unhappy customers wanting to be seen/heard on tv)

More companies need to learn that if you're upfront and honest about the problems, and you offer decent amends rather than let the customers drag them out of you, customers will be understanding and positive. I think that most of the people who complain when unforeseen but occasionally inevitable things like this happen are complaining either because they're the sort of people who'll complain about anything anyway, or they feel messed about. Companies can easily deal with the second type, but it's such a pity that so many of them are so short-sighted about it.

Maybe this incident...in conjunction with the delay of Pacific Sun is sending a message to P&O...with all this negative publicity maybe its time that they actually build something new for the Australian market...

Think of the pro's:
- brand new 50 000grt ship
- state of the art facilities to match other brand spanking new ships
- far less maintenance costs for a newer ship
- probably more efficient, more environmentally friendly
- better PR (shows commitment to Aust market, ready to fight off competitors like Superstar)
- a ship specifically built for the South Pacific market, not modified interiors from some other region

vs. current situation:
- high running costs (PS engines, maintenance)
- a ship that is older than I am!
- generally regarded as a second class ship
- absolutely no comparison to new competitors such as Superstar's
- bad PR
- list goes on and on and on and on..........

Pungpui, I agree with you. I think Carnival/P&O does have an existing modern 50,000 grt range design they can utilize. I am talking about the AIDA ships. Those ships are really nice, and all that needs to be done is rearrange the public room layouts and add in the interiors influenced by the South Pacific, I think it will be a great success!

pungpui you raise some good points there-

with the addition of the 'updated' pacific sun, i dont think Carnival Australia will be changing any time soon. Though saying this i guess it depends on how much longer pacific sky lasts

The problem with purchasing a new ship is $$$ . how much would they get for pacific sky/ pacific sun? would anyone purchase them? of would they shuffle them round to another Carnival brand?

just on the original topic of negitive publicity etc...

I think that this pacific sky incident will be quickly forgotten as in just 2 weeks there is bound to be reports on the "New" Pacific Sun cruising from Sydney. Then again a month later the arrival of the largest ship to visit Australia.

So if the public are being turned off by this latest incident, im sure future news reports will change their opinion

Keitaro - i would have to agree, i like the look of those aida ships... just paint the hull white with a yellow and blue stripe

"theyre nice, theyre different theyre unusual" (for those kath n kim fans)

hey there phil, i know building ships costs money but what is Carnival and most other lines doing? Building new ships for markets where they see opportunity for growth (mainly!)...is Australia not a market for growth? Clearly by sending over a second ship and all of the articles i've read by local 'passanger surveys' im sure P&O achknowledges that its expanding...

so why not gamble on a new build...what happened to "you gotta spend big to make big"?

Coz i know for sure that if Star Cruises sent Virgo down here for another season (not sure if they actually are), if i sat there decided to book a ticket i'd definately go with Virgo, absolutely no doubts about it (even if price is higher, decor is asian...so what!)

I think on A Current Affair there were three women (same family from 3 generations) who said they'll never cruise on this ship again. Apparently they missed out on a cruise in New Zealand when Pacific Sky had that detached bulkhead (and nearly sunk). The free cruise they were happen to be given was this one from Brisbane. Is that rotten luck or what?

Anyway... the idea of a brand new cruise ship of 50,000gt (or bigger) for the Australian market would be great. Maybe Carnival is still not convinced about the Australian market. Maybe they want to wait until someone else moves in before them? Like you said pungpui it would be great if Star could send down here Superstar Virgo. Then maybe Carnival would pull its finger out.

Here is a newly finished and quick rendering of an AIDA ship in P&O Australia livery, minus the blue and yellow hull lines (due to the lower placement of the lifeboats, I haven't found a solution for the placements).

Are P&O determined to give us backpacker ships .

Don't get me wrong here, what they deliver is great, the cruises are great, everything is great .......except the ship they are trying to do it on.
Pacific Sun is only 1 year younger than Pacific Sky.
On other boards ,North Americans are longing to come downunder and cruise with us.
If P&O/Carnival don't deliver, there are cruise lines waiting in the wings to come in and clean up!!!!!!!!!

i cant understand your fuss about pacific sky its not a rustbucket, its in ammaculate condition and sorry to dissapoint you knockers out there it sails nearly full on every sailing so why replace it. it had a minor engine problem the other day and its getting repaired if you drove your car to new caledonia and back every week im sure it would break down occasionaly.when the public start voting with their feet then p&o might repace sky but for the time being sky is here to stay i personally think sky is a better ship than sun mainly because it has a promenade deck and as for star they wont be coming here for a long time i think they are still licking their fingers after thier last effort

I agree with you Claudio. The PACIFIC SKY and PACIFIC SUN are good ships. Is P&O/Carnival still going to give the SKY a facelift? I remember reading about it sometime ago. I know I probably will get some nasty looks back, but the PACIFIC SKY and PACIFIC SUN are much better ships than the FAIR PRINCESS (P&O Australia days).

Like ATW? <then ducks rapidly>

Seriously, though, P&O/Carnival don't have a monopoly on this. Anyone can do it anytime. The relative paucity of cruises, and the number of other lines who drop in for a season and then don't come back, suggest that despite the apparent pent-up demand, the market just doesn't deliver it.

As for Americans longing to come downunder and cruise, I'll bet that much of that evaporates once they see the flight schedules. As a rabid over-generalisation, the US is a country that shudders at the thought of a "long" 6-hour flight.

Nicely said Globaliser! Just think with that attitude, if they somehow moved to Australia, tourism outward would die. Far out, I just spent a seemingly non-stop flight from SYD-MEL-KUL-LHR for 26 hours (incl. transits) and I wasnt complaining one bit!

That’s the price we Aussies pay, but done it once, as most of us Down Under have, we are used to it. Yes, the Yanks love Australia, give them a Star Princess or Sapphire Princess and they are down here in an instant. Maybe as keitaro suggested we could have an AIDA style cruise vessel here all-year round. I wouldn’t say it should be exactly one of them, but one styled for Aussie and foreigner cruisers. I have got the feeling there are many in North America that would come down here even over their summer (our winter).

As for other cruise lines with interest in Australia, I bet you if MSC had more ships up its sleeve they’d send one down here asap. Maybe that will eventually happen, let’s say not earlier than 2009. Star also knows Australia is a good market, but their first priority is SE Asia. If SARS happens to come along again they may consider it, and this time hopefully market their product a little better.

BTW nice rendering keitaro.
