I hope it will be easy to fix.
It seems PSky has had a boiler explosion and passengers were told to disembark.
Anything more?

according to a news update...

quote:
Whilst passengers were boarding P&O’s Pacific Sky in Brisbane Australia a boiler valve blew. Passengers remained onboard and it was reported they had an excellent night whist berthed in the Brisbane River. However, the next morning passengers were advised that repairs could not be made at that time and that her cruises had been cancelled until further notice.

is it on its way to Port Vila? or maybe doing some sea trials? who knows!

update -

quote:
Engineers commenced repairs as divers spent considerable time in the water to fix the problem. Then, when the all clear was given on Monday, another mechanical problem surfaced and Pacific Sky was further delayed. She finally departed Brisbane 29½ hours late. The 12 night Pacific cruise has been shortened to 10 and passengers will receive some kind of compensation, however, P&O would not comment.

Thank you for the update phil-a

What a pity that we downunder
have the old ships
that the directors in Head Office want to screw dollars out of........

You will see the difference on your upcoming cruise.

it would be nice BUT - just cause P&O Australia is now called Carnival Australia, i still cant see them investing that much money. (ie for any new build - only the second best for us aussies!)

just another thought...

when pacific sky moves on, could a different 'new' ship do as the pacific princess does? ie send an Aurora or Oriana or heck a Destiny or Glory down under for 5?6?month period to cruise alongside the pacific sun.

That way we could cruise year round on pacific sun, and then during the peak time pick from a nice new big ship - just a thought!

Why has Australia always been the cruise area where shipping lines (such as P&O) sent there older passenger vessels?

No. If it had been true it would have been all over the Radio/TV news that was on this morning. The repert just says another engine broke down. No detail of the problem, no explosion or 'hole' and as she's making headway, can't be too bad. Apart from the site linked I can't see anything else anywhere mentioning it.

No, but you still have me wondering whether there was any point in your post other than to waste server space and bandwidth.

I suspect that it's largely because the local market has always been too small to support big ships (and will probably always remain so). For perspective, we're talking about a local market of 20 million Aussies and 4 million Kiwis. In a small market, it's more difficult to run any higher-end cruising on a big scale, simply for economic reasons. Hence the historic concentration on a lower-fare "party" cruising style.

Between them the lower yields and the requirement for smaller ships drives the decisions to relocate the older, smaller, cheaper (ie less capital-intensive) ships to Australia.

from AAP

quote:
a problem with its starboard engine and could not operate at full speed... forced the cruise ship to return to Brisbane a week early.

Mr Smith said the Pacific Sky's engine problems, which were discovered at sea about 600km north-east of Brisbane, were unrelated to its earlier difficulties in port and posed no threat to the safety of the ship's passengers.

the Pacific Sky was expected to return to its berth at Pinkenbah wharf on the Brisbane River about 6am on Friday

Mr Smith defended the ship's record and said its maintenance program had been up to scratch.
"The Pacific Sky is maintained to a very high degree of technical vigilance," Mr Smith said

Passengers would get a full refund and a 25 per cent credit on their next cruise.

Godness me, why did they allow the ship to sail?
Steamers are delicate nature and it would have been better to cancel the whole cruise and make sure she was ready to sail without hickup.
A similar thing happened when I served onboard her in 1998.
She had serious overheating, and flooding, and we had to disembark 50 or so passengers!
Then a storm made us miss several ports, only to break down completely for 4 hours in very rough mid-ocean.
It was quite a cruise, and we had to saty overnight in Melbourne, skipping the beautiful Tasmania.
