To see photos of some of the Signature of Excellence ammenities that were added to the Ryndam recently, go to HAL's web site, www.hollandamerica.com and click on "Unveiling the Enhanced Ryndam" and then click on "Ryndam Highlights".

Wow - what a change. She looks spectacular. Can't wait until they add these ammenities to the other ships.

She looks good. I think that the old style library was much better though. The Crows Nest is a definite improvement over the old one from the looks of it. Does anyone know if they are still able to show movies in the theater or just use it for meetings and culinary demonstrations?

I understand that movies will still be shown in the Wajang Theatre but probably not as often as they do now.

I don't agree with you about the library. It was very small and there were never that many people in there. The card room was empty 95% of the time and by taking the three rooms (internet cafe also) and combining them, it has opened up the whole area. I think it's lovely.

Does anyone have before and after deck plans of the changes to Ryndam? The HAL website appears to only have the old plans.

New deck plans are not out yet.

What section in particular are you looking for?

No idea where the idea came from, but I don't believe it's not on the stern - I think it's on Sports deck at the bow of the ship. Deck plans for the Ryndam are no longer on their web site, but if you look at the deck plans for the Veendam or Maasdam, there is a section at the bow labeled "Hal Club Waverunner", theatre and computer area.

Guess we will have to wait until someone returns from the ship to find out more.

"Hal Club Waverunner" is located at the stern and directly behind the funnel area on Sports deck.

The Maasdam is the first ship in the HAL fleet with dedicated Club Hal facilities.

That review was by Joe back in 2001. We are talking about the Oasis, the new dedicated area for the teens. I am going to write to my friend on the Ryndam and find out exactly where the Oasis is.

From the pictures on the HAL site, it looks like it's directly behind the funnel.

OMG - I just re-read what I wrote and I must have been having a "senior" moment. I meant the Stern, STERN, not the bow.

Please forgive this "old" lady. I knew it was behind the funnel, but I don't know what I was thinking when I typed "bow".

The pics look good. Here's the Oasis

"The Oasis, a teens-only deck for ages 13-18, is a perfect space for teens to soak up rays and hang out. The deck features hammocks, a state-of-the-art sound system and a laser light show. A special passageway from The Loft, an indoor teens-only space, accesses the secluded Oasis."
There are a couple more pics on the site too, along with one of the Loft. Looks great for the teens, out the way

Even those of us a wee bit younger have those 'Senior Moments' Sympatico! I have them all the time now, hate to think what I'll be like in another 10yrs or so.

Pam

Here's the answer I just got from the ship:

"The Oasis is an outside deck on top of the youth center, located behind the funnel, it has a wading pool with a water fall."

Now we know for sure.

Thanks Pam -

Nathan you were right! Next time I will read my posts 3 times before I send them.

The Oasis is not the first such thing a/b a HAL vessel. The only new thing about it is that this deck club is specialy fore teens.

Way back in the '30s the HAL vessels Statendam (1929) and Rotterdam (1908) have such open deck clubs called Scheveningen Beach called after the Hollands main beach resort and vissing village Scheveningen (now part off the city Den Haag).

Those deck erea's have copy's off old Dutch canal houses and where in usse on cruises to the carribean and the Med.

Only in those days this area was destined fore adults only.

I like the Oasis and the other improvements a/b Rijndam specialy the crows nest.

I am a bit of a traditionalist if you will and am not really overly into the coffee bar thing. So for me the original libary was much better although I could have lived without the Puzzle Corner and Card Room. To each his own though. I will not pass total judgement on this area until I have seen it for myself in the flesh and tried it out. Who knows I just may end up likeing it.

Didn’t Rotterdam IV used to carry a Dutch street barrel-organ with her?
That would be a nice touch and a unique difference HAL would have from her “competing” sister cruise companies. Of course she would play modern music books and HAL could call it “Street organ under the stars”

Onno i believe there was one a/b the Rotterdam 4. Inn the 50's/60's HAL advertice with a Dutch street organ on deck off the Statendam 4 (1957) and dancing passengers.

I would like your idea off a renewd Scheveningen Beach it would set HAL apart frome here competitors.

Joe, I coudn't find a Dutch street organ on my Rotterdam's Tourist class deck plan of '64 which shown only Pianos in the Lounge and Cafe de La Paix on Promenadedeck.

How about yours ; Below plan from

here

P.S. I saw a Dutch street organ decorated with beautiful ornaments while I was staying in Amsterdam.

Hi Ocean Liners.

The street organ Onno wrote about was a/b the Rotterdam 4 off 1908.

The street organ i wrote about is not a fixed one a/b the Statendam. It was placed a/b the ship only fore publicity purpese. And was not a/b the vessel whene sailing.

Today the m.s. Zaandam have a full working organ a/b she is the atrium center peace. This organ is a mix off an church organ and a traditional Dutch street organ. She operated manualy ore by computer.

I am impressed by the pictures so far of the enhanced Ryndam with the Signature of Excellence (SOE) retrofit. Looks good. Holland America is lucky in that the majority of its fleet from the Statendam to the Amsterdam are basically to the same S class interior design.

It will interesting to see how they will retrofit the three existing Vista-class ships which have a different interior ship design. Like where will they put the Exploration Cafe when they have the Windstar concept already.

Also I presume that the new Noordam will come out of the Shipyard in 2006 with SOE already in place.

Also how are they going to do the Prinsendam which is again another design and is slightly crowded already in its public spaces.
