Hi everyone.

We were in San Francisco on Saturday and both the Sapphire Princess and the Volendam were in Port. We took a some pictures and have posted them on online. The link is attached.

Photos

There was quite a large crowd of people gathered to watch both ships sail at around 5PM. We met one older gentleman who was a Holland America afficianado. He had sailed on the previous Rotterdam and was quite interesting.

We had thought about booking the 10 day Mexican Riviera trip that the Sapphire was doing but decided against it. After seeing the ship on Saturday, I wish we had gone ahead with the trip.

Oh well - the Dawn Princess is doing the same itinerary this time next year, so we'll probably do that trip.

What pier was VOLENDAM sailing from?

Nice pics, by the way, thanks.

I believed Volendam was berthed at Pier 30.

I'm not sure of the pier number where Volendam was berthed (we didn't see her until she sailed through the Bay Bridge). I believe she was berthed at the future location of the new Cruise Terminal by the Bay Bridge, which is where the X Games were held a couple of years ago.

We had thought about going back up to see the Mercury too - but we had too much to do on Sunday.

I just heard on the news that three people were airlifted from the Volendam - 2 with chest pains and one with a viral infection.

Ben,

I also think the Volendam is looking nice. I saw her once before, a few years ago, but my view was obstructed. I really only could see her very top decks and funnel. It was good to be able to see her sailing through the San Francisco Bay.

It's wonderful that you won a cruise.

Enjoy!

Craig

I've sailed on Volendam ... actually, our cruise on her was probably our favorite; she is indeed a beauty. Great pics ... thanks for sharing.

A friend and her boyfried left on the Mercury yesterday ... if the weather was anything like Saturday, looks like they had a beautiful day.

The Volendam was berthed at pier 30/32, its a six acre pier of nothing. Portable tents are pitched when ever its used as a cruise ship terminal.Itsd also used when the present terminal at pier 35 cannot fit ships that are to big over there.

I also went abourd the Mercury for a charity brunch on Sunday benifiting cystic fiborsis, it is a beautiful ships, but the current cruise terminal needs alot of improvement.

I just happened to be coming into SF across the Bay Bridge just as Sapphire was heading toward the Golden Gate Bridge. It was all I could do to keep my eyes on the road.

It was kind of a foggy/hazy afternoon and the big white ship looked ethereal.

That new pier....the piece of nothing...offers much better views of the ships compared to the "traditional" pier by Fishermans Wharf. And if you're in the left lane of the Bay Bridge, you can look down on the upper decks of the ship!

Your pictures are AMAZING! I was just on the Sapphire Princess (my first cruise) for 10 days last week and didn't really get a chance to take pictures of the ship. Your photos are just awesome, thank you for sharing them. It brings back amazing memories.

I do not like many of the design features on newbuilds, and I think that the DC-10 jetpods on the stacks of Sapphire Princess are stupid.....BUT I think that that impressive, commanding, extended bridge is a classic, and should be the dominating feature of these two ships.

But the stern is an abomination! And then, some like shopping-cart handle designs on ships as well.
