I too like the itinerary, but not the port of departure---I like to cruise from Minnesota in January, and who wants to sail out of New York in the dead of winter?? Not this girl!! Besides, I prefer to avoid New York at all costs.....so I am settling for the NCL Majesty departing from Charleston. Someday I will get to St. Maarten!!

Even if you don't like NCL and Freestyle Dining there's no reason to say that Norwegian Dawn isn't a nice ship. A nice layout, great decor that isn't over-the-top, and a great promenade. And aside from Freestyle Dining, she doesn't offer any other gimmicks. No rock climbing walls, no "bungee trampolines", and no Movies Under the Stars.

Yes, but NCL didn't have you or anyone like you in mind when they came up with this itinerary (no offense). They had New Yorkers and other tri-state area/North Easterners in mind.

P.S. You can avoid New York at all costs, but without New York City, this country would lose ALOT. It's the greatest city in the United States.

That's because the entire ship is a Gimmick. The gaudy palm trees, the stupid barney dinosaur, the cartoon murals painted everywhere....ick.

CGT,

Did you tour the Dawn with the World Ship Society last weekend?

They had the Topaz tour too: a real liner

I have been on the Norwegian Dawn 3 times now.
Tillberg did the decor, and found a lot of common details and planning with the QM2.

The Norwegian Dawn offers more value for the money than the QM2 and has better service. The passengers are more of the Bourgeois type on the Dawn.

Don't knock the playground in the aft. It keeps the kids busy and not running around causing trouble.
The teen disco forward of it is tastefully done;better than Dazzles.

St Thomas is the Asbury Park of the Carribean crowded with 15,000 cruise passengers at a time. I have been there as an adult and child. Next ship I take that stops there, I simply wont get off.

Don't knock NCL until you sail her.

Folks who have this NYC-phobia haven't a clue as to what they are missing. Sailing from the greatest city in the world is a heart warming experience ... even in the dead of winter. I'll take NYC over ANY Florida port any day.

This itinerary is much better than that dog of an itinerary that goes to the Bahamas and Miami ...yuk!

I totally agree with you Russ. I booked our March 9th QM2 8-day Caribbean for many reasons. The 1st is the ship-we can't wait!! 2nd is the sailing from NYC-we love New York City and the chance to see friends there as well as the thrill of sailing down the Hudson River past the Manhattan skyline. I don't care if it is winter as being from Southern California, it is a change. The ports really don't interest us as we have seen them many times before so they are not an issue. We will swim, get some sun and just relax. It will be a great trip and hopefully we will hit a bit of nasty weather off the east coast heading down to the warm tropics!

P.S. Anyone know what speed QM2 would do in order to get to San Juan in 2 days from New York?

It is very difficult (for me anyway) to find the right Intineraryand the right ship/cruise line, not to mention departure dates. Often I have to compromise or not go cruising at all!

Ditto on NY! Even though the piers stink there is nothing like sailing from New York City. And leaving at night is a TREAT. Did that this year when the Carnival Miracle had a special 5 night Canada cruise. I was with my special someone and it was very romantic. Maybe I am partial because I live in the area but it really is the best city I have ever been too.

CGT you should give the Dawn a try. I know its not a classic liner but the ship really isnt all that bad. And I really felt the service was excellent! I love Celebrity but I have to say NCL had better service on this particular ship at the time I sailed. And I enjoyed the Freestyle. Its not for everyone though.

Come on, Ben, it's a figure of speech ... and not to be taken so literally. Bottom line: Warm or cold, NYC is the greatest city to sail from; especially when compared to Miami, Lauderdale, etc.

Oh, I know Ben ... no problem. I was joking as well.

Though I've never had the pleasure, I can imagine that sailing out of or into Southampton would be a wonderful experience as well ... if only for the history involved.

Cheers,

Russ

Definitely only for the history involved. There's virtually nothing of any scenic interest.

Norwegian Dawn also has a great new 11 day Western Caribbean itinerary out of NYC in late 2005 that includes Ocho Rios, Grand Cayman, Honduras, Belize, Cozumel and Great Stirrup Cay. To those who feel Norwegian Dawn compares unfavorably to QM2, consider the following. Both ships offer 10 day Caribbean cruises round trip out of New York. On Norwegian Dawn you can get a mini-suite on the highest balcony deck for over $1,000. less than a tiny hull balcony cabin on QM2. On QM2, you are confined to the lowest class dining room nightly while on Dawn you have the choice of 10 restaurants. We prefer Norwegian Dawn.

I'd rather pay the $1,000 more for the hull balcony cabin and dine in the "lowest class" dining room on QM2. Having that experience and ambiance is something I value. You may not. Sail NORWEGIAN DAWN all you want.

QM2 is offering the 8-day 'Mariner's Caribbean Cruise' from NYC to 4 ports in a 'hull hole' verandah cabin for $2099.00 per person or a standard outside for $1099.00. Of course you can find less expensive 7-day cruises on other lines sailing out of Ft Lauderdale and Miami, but sailing from New York is special (at least to me).

CGT- I value the experience of enjoying a larger cabin on a higher deck at a lower price. You may not. I value the ambience of a variety of attractive dining options at a time of my choosing. You may not. Sail QM2 all you want.
