I saw (or tried to see through heavy rain!) QM2 the first time on the 18th in Newport, RI. Golden Princess was also present. While the remnants of hurricane Ivan brought Newport lots and lots of rain and wind, QM2 was solidly anchored in the bay. It was pretty impressive to see her under heavy conditions, and it made for some nice photo opportunities. I waited until I see her the first time to confirm my thoughts but here it goes: compared to QE2, she is just plain ugly with her apartment like structure. I have to admit that even Golden Princess looked more graceful. I am not saying this in a bad way though, so do not misunderstand me. Her marketing goals justify her design so relatively speaking, she is an OK looking ship. The problem arises when I compare her with the ships of the "old school".
By the way, the weather got much better that night in Newport. Rain stopped around 17:00 and wind slowed down around 22:00. I am surprised she canceled Sydney. Can anyone tell me the reason? Constricted narrow straits, maybe? Otherwise, I do not know why she would cancel her call.
Here is a picture of her. I have better photos, but this shows Golden Princess and QM2 together.
And here is QE2 in Newport two years ago from the same location:
Enjoy.

I know Ultra-Cruiser; I meant where did it come from when I wrote that first message . I actually photographed Golden Princess last year so it may be a light case of "living in the past"! .
