Well i work for P&O here in Australia, and i can tell you we are spending just over $50million on the Jubilee to create the Pacific Sun for our market down under. This includes all the costs for the dry dock, contracted workers, interior fitout and materials, new mechanical fittings including a duck tail on the stern, and also all the costs associated with trainning the new staff and having no passengers onboard the vessel for 2 months.
It is a massive operation, and now there are obviously going to be further costs involved with the delays caused by the Hurricanes, however its too early to know the full extent of these.

will P&O be placing anymore info about the refit on their website any time soon?
I am sure all members of this forum will be looking forward to any of your further postings, as there is a great deal of interest on this board , in the new Pacific Sun.
May I also take this opportunity to wish you and P&O all the very best for the coming cruise season. With Pacific Sky,Pacific Sun,Pacific Princess,Sapphire Princess, and the calls from Aurora and Oriana ,you are all in for a busy season.

http://www.sealetter.com/Sep-97/vs997.html - Viking Serenade has a duck tail stern as shown and mentioned in this review.....havn't got a clue wht it does i guess its for extra stabability
From here
quote:The tests in water basin played a very important role in the design of the Project Eagle's hull: they showed the need of vertical stabilizers behind the Azipods (units on which the propellers are mounted), as well as the addition of a so-called "ducktail" to the stern. This extension of the hull is efficient in decreasing the wave and pressure resistance at the ship ending (thus reducing global fuel costs).

The STARWARD had a duck-tail added in the early 1980s, I believe. I was working on the brand new CROWN MONARCH in 1991 when here duck-tail was added--I know that was for stability reasons.
Also, the 1985-built HOLIDAY had sponsons added to her stern almost immediately, for stability reasons, although these were never placed on JUBILEE or CELEBRATION, which were only a few feet longer. I wonder if the JUBILEE is considered a "tender" ship and the duck-tail is there for better stability after all these years.
Cheers

nope, it's one of those ugly things they add to the stern. See ISLAND ESCAPE/VIKING SERENADE and ITALIA PRIMA.
Ugly! Ugly! Poor ship...

Thanks to the information on this board I now realise what they are doing. But WHY ?
P&OCruiser: We will not be putting any more information on the website until the completion of the works, it has been so busy around here just working on the introduction and now we have the delays from the Hurricane so the website is not a priority unfortunately, we are working overtime just to get the ship here.
Also about the other changes, every cabin and bathroom is being ripped out and replaced from scratch, new beds, carpets, insulation, and totally new bathroom capsules "ala" princess. So the cabins will be spectacular, all new! Also the dining rooms are being ripped out and replaced. Will have more details soon, have to run!

Sounds good! Those class of ships are quite dated with their 1980s decor. We did a three day cruise on MS Holiday a few years back and her interiors were in need of a major overhaul. She was very clean inside and out, but the popular 80s color mauve was everywhere. That was our 1st and last Carnival cruise.
You are expecting too many children than Carnival.

Her extra size means that she will accommodate just over 300 more passengers with a choice of king-size or twin beds across all three cabin grades - Suite with Balcony, Outside Twin and Inside Twin. 3rd, 4th and 5th (rollaway bed for children) berth cabins are also available.

Jubile had small children's playroom, So that OZ Discotheque was virtually taken over by teenge during holiday season.
