As is mentioned in another post, the maiden cruise of Pacific Sun has been cancelled due to Hurricane Francis, but I cannot find any news on the actual ship anywhere!

Where is the ship right now, has it finished sailing for Carnival yet? Carnival still have it on their website, yet no cruises are listed for it, and there are no press releases about it leaving the fleet, or wishing it well or anything?

The refurbishment was meant to be happening at a shipyard in Jacksonville i had heard, does anyone know if this is correct, or what shipyard exactly is doing the work??

And is the shipyard anywhere near the hurricane, and if not why has it held up the refit work?

Does anyone have any information on the ship or its whereabouts at all?? Any news would be most appreciated!

Not even google brings up a single news story!

do any cruise talkers live in the area? some before and after shots would be great to see

I also wonder how much of the work will be done onboard during the repositioning cruise?! will most of the staff remain the same? or will new ones be trained up over this time also?

how long will it take to get from Freeport to Sydney- (actually i think brisbane is the first stop) a week or two? or three?

Nautical miles between Freeport and Sydney via Panama about 9,000 nm.

The Pacific Sun contract will be completed by October 2004.
Mivans project team will work on the liner for three weeks at Freeport in the Bahamas before completing the refit during the three-week voyage to Brisbane, Australia. Mivans contract covers the

Hurricane Frances went directly over Grand Bahama Island (Freeport) yesterday, and at this time is still blanketing the entire State of Florida. Not sure if JUBILEE / PACIFIC SUN is in Freeport or Jacksonville, but there is obviously going to be a delay in getting the vessel out and on her way to Australia. I'm sure that's the reason for the delay in her start-up voyages Down Under.

just curious- if the ship is currently in dry dock... how stable would it be with no water around it and gale force winds?

Im sure if the reason for the delay was due to damage caused by the hurricane then there would be more news about it on the web... wait and see i guess

Maybe slightly off topic, but I'm suprised they kept the trademark Carnival funnel- even if they are another division of the same company.

both docks at grand bahama shipyard are floating. the plan that has been in place since the yard opened is to submerge both docks and remove any vessels when a hurricane warning is received. at present the yard is shut down.

Commodore: I do believe they are going to do "extensive modifications" to the Carnival Whale funnel, ie Cut the wings off!!

I heard they are re-modelling the trailing edge and top of the funnel to give it a similar look to Pacific Sky, possibly adding the flat fin that adorned the old sitmar funnels?

Any news on the dry dock and its condition, did it suffer much damage?

I had heard they were going to remodel the funnell ,with imaginative and creative
engineering ,
into a giant kangaroo........
but when they did the final calculations....
it would not fit under the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Actually, I have seen an advertisement for Pacific Sun in a couple of Sydney newspapers (SMH, Sunday Telegraph, i think even Sun Herald) and if you look closely, the things i noticed where a very different funnel (wings have completely gone, in fact it looks like a smaller version of Aurora's funnel) and the bridge with the tinted black windows arent there anymore. I'm not sure whats going to happen but these were just some of my observations. If i find the image again I'll probably scan and post it.

At their site it's the old Carnival funnel, were they too lazy to do a proper computer rendering like Costa did for Costa Tropicale?

Jubilee02, the image you are referring to was already posted in a previous thread way back in July:

Here comes the Sun

From what SydneyBoy and pungpui are saying the Carnival funnel will lose its wings and be restyled. We'll have to wait and see.

this weeks sunday telegraph had an ad only showing Pacific Sky, still computer generated!!! Its been here for years, they still publish this rubbish.

But it would be stupid of them not to chop off the wings, it would be way to obvious Australia is getting second hand rubbish...well...more obvious than it already is of course!

i take it your refering to stern view of pacific sky thats lifted off p&o brochure it shows the rear decks from fairsky days. p&o were using a picture of cesare ditel (who is master of sapphire princess) with a small child on his shoulder they stopped using the picture a couple of years ago. trouble was it was taken in early 80s when he worked on fairstar.

I personally think the funnel should stay as it is. The vessel was designed with it, it still fits well, even with the new colors, and it must be thought also about the smoke. When they rebuild it to another funnel-shape, it might not work anymore that well as it did before which means that most of the smoke might end throughout the open decks on the rear of the ship.
But let's see what the company decides to do.

I was just wondering that, according to Lloyds Register of Shipping, the JUBILEE has been renamed PACIFIC SUN on January 19th 2004 and kept this name exactly for 1 week and was then renamed JUBILEE again. What was the reason of this ? Was the ship intended to go to Australia earlier already and then still kept with Carnival ? Just wondering.

Patrick

My understanding has always been that Carnival has somehow "trademarked" their funnel design, to be distinctive to their brand. Not sure if this was or could be done legally, but that is the company's intention.

When the TROPICALE went over to Costa, the funnel was rebuilt (or rather replaced) by the current Costa funnel design. It would be interesting to know if that is as effective in keeping smoke from the decks as the original funnel was!

chris- im not actually sure, but i would think there will not be any paying passengers onboard for the trip to oz. I wonder if the crew will get some 'time off'?

I guess it also depends on whether the 'Jubilee Crew' will stay on or if a new bunch of people start - either way further training for the new aussie market may be needed?
