I have just found out from some friends booked on this maiden cruise that it has been cancelled! I rang P&O Australia who comfirmed the news and advised it is due to Hurricane Francis in the US, which has caused a delay in the dry-docking and $50 million dollar refurbishment! This means the ship will no longer arrive in Austalia on 16 Oct as was scheduled.

The Maiden 10 night cruise N433, was due to depart Sydney on October 20, and was already sold out with 1910 passengers due to sail. P&O is in the middle of notifying all passengers and agents that the sailing has been cancelled and they are issuing full refunds and providing a 20% discount on a future cruise!

P&O can't confirm when the ship will actually arrive as it depends on the Hurricane, and so cannot rule out having to cancel further cruises.

This is disasterous! It must be going to cost P&O an absolute fortune, not to mention the bad PR and its not even there fault! It will be even worse if they have to cancel the next cruise as it is a special event cruise sailing from Sydney to Melbourne specially for the Melbourne Cup (Australia's most famous horse race, and one of our biggest national sporting event!), that cruise has been sold out since late January and is full of passengers who do the same cruise every year!! It is still scheduled to depart 30 October, so fingers crossed!

P&O Cruises has released details of the $35-million refit of the 47,000-ton, Pacific Sun, which will begin year-round cruising from Sydney on October 30.

The 1,900-passenger Pacific Sun - the biggest cruise liner ever based in Australia, will replace the popular Pacific Sky which is moving to a new year-round base in Brisbane.

From P&O Australia's site

Here Comes the Sun
Released: 15 Jul 2004

A child-free sunbathing deck, oyster and sushi bar, queen-size beds, New Orleans-style piano bar, art auctions and two big new party nights are some of the innovations to debut this October on the biggest cruise liner ever based in Australia, Pacific Sun.

P&O Cruises has released details of the $35 million refit of the 47,000-ton ship, which will begin year-round cruising from Sydney on October 20.

Which statement is correct???

Ocean Liners, I copied the press release exactly as it was issued by MG Media Communications. Maybe they made a typing error. I would assume the date issued by P&O to be correct, as stated by SydneyBoy. There's no big deal.

The official maiden cruise date for Pacific Sun has always been October 20 2004. It has been printed in 2 brochures, the first released in October 2003 and the second around May this year. The 20 October cruise has even been on sale since October 2003 and my friends booked on it in January this year.

Also the Sydney Ports website has been showing the arrival date as 16 October 2004 and the first departure date of 20 October 2004 since just after the announcement that Jubilee would be transferred to P&O Australia.

Obviously in that one press release you presented there was a typo!

I would have thought it was rather obvious which statement is correct.....
Sydney Boy...although, as you say, this could cost P&O an "absolute fortune"..the reality is that over an extended cruise season these losses will be fully recovered....plus they will also load extra charges to make cost recoveries...The cancellation of October 20 and 30 cruises will not markedly affect the overall profitability of the Pacific Sun Australian season......And there is no reason whatsoever why, properly handled, there should be any bad PR over a change of cruise schedules caused by so called "natural causes"..P&O are good at that!!

I just wonder how P&O new in advance of Frances hitting the FL coast quite what the full effect would be. They already have some leeway in the 4 days between 16 & 20 Oct to allow for a bit of a delay. Maybe MG knew more than they should have said & P&O have been wondering for a while how they were going to meet the 20 Oct deadline, so using Frances as an excuse. It's over a month away; whatever delay Frances may cause, some time can be caught up. Pure speculation & suspicion on my behalf, but I feel sorry for those who have been looking forward to being on the Australian Debut cruise for so long.

Pam

Later.. now I read she's being refitted in Freeport not Jacksonville.. makes a big difference to my comments above, which are now nonsense.

So does anyone know what effect Frances had on the dockyards there? I have not seen a news report that mentions them. I assume Jubilee would not have gone in to dock beforehand and sat the storm out somewhere at sea? so would have been a delay.

The impact from Hurrican Frances is trebled when you factor in the delay from several lost work days, potential damage to supplies and potential damage to the yard and surrounding Grand Bahama island.

Frances stalled for almost two days with the eye just a few miles from Freeport and pounded them relentlessly. The island won't recieve the 'all clear' until later today or tomorrow for people to leave their homes and businesses to begin reopening. Undoubtedly, it will take quite some time for the shipyard to get back up to speed.

There are various reports from 'severe' damage to 'mostly light' damage, what can one believe. The airport has reopened and CCl said yesterday that Carnival Miracle would still leave Baltimore today headed for the Bahamas.

Well I am sorry Cruise Liners that the date on that press release I posted was wrong. Maybe we’re not all as precise and regimented as you...that has the time to check, double check, correct and re-edit their posts. I admire you.

What about if that source was the only one at that point in time? MG Media Communications issue press releases for P&O Australia, and I would assume they issue the release first before P&O posts it on their website, even if it is only a matter of hours. Anyhow, errors can and do happen, with MG Media Communications, a third party and even with me.

So... now, without getting into a stupid argument, I would like to know why do you have to be so nitpicking and ask a question such as “Which statement is correct???” since SydneyBoy and, above all, P&O Australia confirmed the date as October 20th? Also, you can check the internet within minutes yourself, can you not? bmajor’s statement: “I would have thought it was rather obvious which statement is correct...” should be the closing remark on this issue, don’t you agree?

And by the way, I must apologise for calling you ‘Cruise Liners’ before you start criticising me.

Your Here comes the Sun's Topic was posted on Jul 20,, it was 5 days behind than P&O's press release which released on Jul 15.

If you were check out with P&O site before posting, I or another cruise talkers who read this topic weren't bother. If you spared to write the thread above, you had better spare to time for checking.

Any news or thread about Jubilee/Pacific Sun?

GUYS!!! It really doesn't matter! If someone finds a press release which is of interest and posts it on here, surely they cannot be held responsible for any error, seeing as it came from a reliable source. Clearly all it was, was a Typo, someone hit 3 instead of 2! The rest of the press release was correct. A quick check of other sources would have revealed the correct date as the 20th, however one might not have even picked up on the mistake if you didn't have prior knowledge of the correct date!

I'm sure bulbousbow was posting with the best intentions and i really don't feel you need to carry on with the issue Ocean Liners. It was a simple mistake and we all make them

It seems Ocean Liners you are the only one that bothers... others do not respond in the manner you do... you come across as being pedantic and nitpicking. OK, if this issue is so dear to you, why didn’t you correct my post back on July 20, when I started the Here Comes The Sun thread, or at any time since?

quote:
...If you spare to wrote the thread above, you had better spare to time for checking.

That doesn’t mean I can check all sources of cruise information every time I’m on the internet. Now, let me put something straight: when I make a post I do it with good intentions, and I do it with the knowledge that the information I have is bona fide, however I am not infallible and mistakes do happen, so if you want to make corrections, make them, but don’t come to me or to others on this forum with superfluous questions, questions you already know the answer to. Is that clear.

Phil_a: no im not on the Melbourne Cup cruise unfortunately. I did do a Melbourne cruise a few years ago though on the Sky. I just feel sorry for all the people who go every year, they must be worried!

Pam: I think the schedule for the refit and repositioning was quite tight, as they were due to continue interior fitout during the 3 week voyage downunder. I have a feeleing there were then a few PR events and maybe even a christening planned in those 4 days in Sydney. But the actual dry docking is very extensive, they have upped the spending to over $50million, up from the origional 30, then 40!

So can anyone confirm exactly where the ship is now? I wish Carnival would issue an update! Even a webcam would be helpful!

P&O now a starter for the Melbourne Cup
September 9, 2004

As reported earlier (Seatrade Insider 08/09/2004) the shutdown of Grand Bahama drydock due to Hurricane Frances has delayed the A$35m transformation of Carnival's 47,262gt Jubilee into P&O Cruises Australia's second resident ship, Pacific Sun, which was due to make her maiden voyage ex-Sydney October 20.

A company spokeswoman today confirmed all passengers on the 10-night 'Magic Muse' cruise to the Whitsundays, Cairns and Port Douglas will receive a full refund and the offer of a 20% discount on a future sailing.

The spokeswoman told Seatrade Insider the 1,900-passenger Pacific Sun is now due to arrive in Sydney October 27 to make the second cruise in her published 2004/05 programme which is a six-night cruise to Melbourne for the horse race that stops the nation.

The spokeswoman also said the re-naming of the ship by Australian Olympic and Commonwealth Games swimmer Lisa Curry Kenny, which was due to take place next month, has been postponed until 'sometime in November.'

Thank you bulbousbow ,

Great news indeed, but just a thought......

What happens to the crew while the ship is in dry dock?
Will the same experienced crew from Jubilee be re employed in Australia,or will they take on a whole new crew?
