Has anyone heard anything about Royal Caribbean's Ultra-Voyager? I think it's rather strange that the company hasn't let anyone make any reservations yet. I mean the ship is due in the Summer of 2006, and usually by now, you could as least reserve a room. Also, does anyone know where the ship is traveling too? (Caribbean, Mexico, etc.) Well, I hope someone can help me out. Thanks again!!

quote:Masa extends Ultra Voyager 2 optionAugust 18, 2004FINNISH shipbuilder Kværner Masa-Yards has given Royal Caribbean Cruises another month to consider its contract for the Ultra Voyager 2. Originally, the cruise line had until 31 August to place a firm order for the 3,600-passenger vessel, the sister to the $720M Ultra Voyager 1. The proposed second ship in the series is due for delivery in 2007, and the option period has now been extended to 30 September. The unusually short extension period given to Royal Caribbean implies that the cruise line may be seriously considering exercising the option, and that previously announced plans to stretch several of its older Vision-class ships – beginning with the Enchantment of the Seas – will not preclude Royal Caribbean from pursuing additional avenues for growth in the short term.

I forget the exact details, but I recall that she will be about 15% bigger than the Voyager class, which I think will makes her around 160,000 gross tons - some 10,000 gross tons bigger than the QM2.
Yes, she will carry more passengers. RCI are a 'mass market' cruise line, they will not have so many very big suites like QM2's 'Duplex' variety, or a 'grill class', which leaves room for more standard cabins.
The good news for 'big ship' lovers is that she is likely to be considerably cheaper to cruise on than the QM2, although she is only likely to cruise the Caribbean.
I recently noticed than a week on a Voyager class ship in a Balconly cabin can cost half the price of a week on the QM2 in an inside cabin! However, both cruise lines do offer very different experiences, so it is not really fair directly comparing the prices!
