I have been trying to find out myself Rob. I just cannot find a definitive list. Apparently there are 8, a figure I have seen mentioned in many places. Many websites though are full of info as ancient as The Games themselves, still listing all the ex ROC ships.
QM2, Rotterdam, Westerdam, AidaAura, Ocean Countess & Odysseus are the only ones I can see at presen, but may not be correct.

I did come across this article, about the underwater security & sniffing blimp though.

"Main port of Piraeus closed for security cable installation

July 20, 2004
SportsLine.com wire reports

ATHENS, Greece -- Athens' main port was sealed for two hours Tuesday to allow divers to install an underwater monitoring system as part of an Olympic security network that protesters contend is a privacy invasion.

The fiber-optic cables are a key element of an electronic web of cameras, sensors and other intelligence-gathering devices designed to help safeguard the Aug. 13-29 Olympics. Greece is spending $1.24 billion on Olympic security.

Although the devices are considered necessary for security, several groups said they will demonstrate against their use. Anti-globalization groups said they would protest outside Greece's parliament. Some political parties also have expressed concerns.

Police officials Tuesday tried to reassure Athenians that the electronic monitoring system, which includes a blimp and thousands of infrared and high-resolution cameras, will not violate privacy.

The 200-foot blimp, which carries chemical "sniffers" and high resolution cameras, will start flying over the city this week, police said.

"The security measures are being implemented with complete respect for human rights and according to the guidelines set out by the agency responsible for privacy and data protection," police spokesman Lefteris Ikonomou said.

Groups opposed to the security measures, including a group called Campaign Anti-2004, said Tuesday at police headquarters that they would demonstrate in protest outside parliament.

"For us the Olympic Games are not welcome. The culture of the Olympic Games is not ours," the groups said in a statement.

The underwater cables at the port of Piraeus will help secure an area that will host one of the world's largest gatherings of cruise ships during the Olympics.

About 15,000 visitors, state officials and dignitaries will be housed aboard at least eight cruise ships -- including the world's largest passenger ship, the Queen Mary 2. A number of luxury yachts also are expected.

High-tech systems also will be used at Athens' airport, where workers at the main operations center will be subject to retinal scans.

Seems like no-one is going to be allowed anywhere near the ships anyhow, not even to take a few photos There are a whole pile of news reports today, all giving slightly different stories, about 3 Mexicans, part of a TV crew, arrested outside the port area [some say within the restricted area] taking photos [some day filming], alledgedly having been beaten/arrested/threatened.

Within/whithout? Photographing/filming? Detained for 2 hrs/checked names and let go? Refused to stop filming/tried to drive away? Just what can you believe in the news?

"Journalists say police beat them

The head of the coast guard yesterday ordered an investigation into claims by two Mexican television journalists that they had been physically abused by harbor police after being caught taking photographs within a restricted area in the port of Piraeus on Monday.

The Merchant Marine Ministry, which is responsible for the coast guard, said three Mexican journalists had been briefly detained in the area where eight cruise ships will be moored during the Olympics to serve as floating hotels for visiting dignitaries. While not explicitly denying the journalists? claim ? which was repeated to The Associated Press by the Mexican ambassador in Athens ? that harbor police beat them, the ministry said doctors who examined one of the alleged victims found no signs of physical abuse. It said the journalists had no permit to take photographs in the restricted area, and had tried to drive away from harbor police.

The Athens 2004 Organizing Committee said it strongly regretted the incident. Later yesterday, a Mexican TV crew was briefly detained for filming near the Tatoi airbase north of Athens.

From here.

Anyone got a permit? Will those lucky enough to be aboard one of the ships be able to take a few photos? One wonders.

Pam

Hi Sympatico, in a local newspaper I read an article about the Captain of Westerdam, Dirk van den Berg, saying that his ship will be the accomodation for the Russians. he also said 'that President Putin's suite is nearby his own accomodation', and that he will invite him for a drink or possibly to play jass.

Aldo - Oosterdam is not in Athens - she is in Alaska.
August 13 and 20 she does 7 day cruises from Seattle, Washington.

Rob - - I read that somewhere also, but what is "Jass"? I thought it was chess??????

So we have?

QM2
Westerdam
Rotterdam
Silver Whisper
Silver Wind
Eloise [Azur]
AIDAaura
Ocean Countess
Odysseus

=9.. one is wrong, unless there are going to be 9 not 8, or must be either OC not there or more probably Odysseus, but Patrick said that in another thread.

I hope someone [the press? ] is going to be able to take a group photo of the gathering [as per the wonderful Perth photos from some years ago]. Seems like the average ship nut is going to be excluded from all access

I was also expecting Cambodge to provide an 007 bypass of the underwater fibre optics & blimp.
How does one get in Cambodge?

Pam

Thank you very much Kit, & welcome to CT. World Renaissance is indeed marked out of her schedules from 6 Aug to 3 Sept, so must be there. So with 10 in your list, my 8 figure is incorrect. I did know about Wind Star, not Wind Spirit as well though.

Eloise & Odysseus could possbily be extras? though I did think Eloise was already in Haifa undergoing a refit. Patrick, do you know?

Hi Kit, welcome aboard! As far as I know you are the first female Dutch poster on this board? Tell us about your connection with cruiseships, have you sailed with them and if so, which one(s)?

I wasn't going mad. She was there at the start of Willem's visit to Gibraltar, but sailed for Haifa on 13 Jul to be refitted & renamed Royal Iris for Mano. Perhaps she may be at Piraeus though too?

Kit - welcome aboard.

I don't think the Wind Spirit and Wind Star will be in Athens and as Oceanliners pointed out they are scheduled for other parts of Europe and the South Pacific.

Maybe you are getting them confused with the Silver Whisper and Silver Wind.

My contact at HAL made no mention of any Wind Ships in Athens, but I will check with him on Monday just to be sure.

I remember in Sydney we were expecting lots of ships like QE2 and Oriana...some names thrown around by local newspapers, but we only ended up with a handful of luxury ships. Great no doubt but a little disappointed i guess.

Hehe Sydney 2000, seems like only yesterday...I was only 12 then!

Do know that the Nieuw Amsterdam was used in Sydney, by the Press I believe, but can't remember the other ships. Friends were on board the NA as he was the Chief Officer.

They had a mini-Olympics for the crews of all the ships docked in the Harbour and I am proud to say that the HAL crew won the rowing contest - they used the open Lifeboats for this contest. Shows they were well trained.
